I need some 30 06 Soft Point ammo for hunting. My rifle is M 1 Garand. I went to Academy and was looking for the Winchester Power Point 150 gr SP but all sold out. Now I see what they have in stock, Remington Core Lokt 150 SP. Then theres the Monarch (Academy owned brand from Barnaul) Brass 150 gr Soft Pont. Also theres Wolf Brand 150 gr SP Steel Cased.

Now , what can you say about the Monarch brand? Is this loaded hot? I know it is not advisable to use commercial ammo on Garand. Or I just look for WInchester 150 gr Power Point?

I will be using this for hog hunting.

Just curious.. What are you hunting with .30-06 this time of the year in Texas?

The Remington's are fine for all ETEX deer and will function normally in the Garand. I have found Monarch to be underpowered in the few calibers that I have tried it, but I have not tried .30-06.

I don't shoot Wolf in anything other than AK/ SKS. I would only shoot Wolf in a Garand if it was a question of being over run by hordes of Zombies or starving to death. Lots of people do shoot it though. You should be able to pick up 150WinPP at Walmart though for about $12 a box.

In th future you should maybe post hunting questions in hunting. You will likely get more repsonses.

I understand that Garands can only handle certain pressures of .30-06, at the risk of bending the op-rod if you load a round that is too hot. I do not know if the Core-Lokt ammunition exceeds this maximum pressure. However, if it doesn't, I'd say go with the Core-Lokt. Its cheap, and it works.

Correct. And pressures cannot be determined solely by the velocity numbers on the side of the box since the burning rate of the powder comes into play. There is no way of determining what type of powder a manufacturer has used. I wouldn't trust Wolf or Monarch in a Garand.

If it was my rifle, I'd find a buddy with a reloading press, pull the bullets off some surplus M2 ball, and then re-seat a SP bullet of the same weight. (Or just start reloading myself).

Last I checked, op rods were going for about $150, give or take.

back when midway sold barnaul 30-06 for $5 a box i tried some of it out & it actually shot very good. one of my columbian mausers will shoot 3/4" groups with it. its kinda dirty ammo but if you can get it cheap enough i'd pick up a couple boxes.
