I would like to get my dad a muzzleloader for a late holiday gift. And I really don't know what kind to get him. There is also the fact that he doesn't own his own rifle. He always has my grandfathers or mine to borrow, but I would like him to have his own.

Anyway back to the point. I read an article in my american rifleman and it mentioned the Optima Elite and it's cability to switch the rifle barrels and muzzleloading barrels. So I figured I could just get the one gun and buy a different barrel. The guns aren't to expensive and the other barrels are not bad at all.

But I don't really know much about the Optima Elite or CVA in general, like what is the max powder for the gun? Or if I have to send in the gun just to have a new barrel put on or if I can just order one and put it on myself?

I myself have a NEF tracker 20ga, so I bought the huntsman barrel. It is a great gun so I thought about getting him a handi rifle and just buying the huntmans barrel for it. I do wish though I could shoot 150 grains of powder instead of the 100, as I hunt fields and long shots are very common.

The NEF barrels are cheaper then the barrels for the Optima Elite and there are also many calibers available for the NEF and there are only 3 calibers for the Optima Elite. And with the NEF handi rifle frame you can also have get the shotgun barrels.

I think I may have just talked myself into the NEF, but I am not really sure. And also I know I can just buy a barrel for me and he will let me use his gun. I have always wanted a 45-70.

Hopefully someone can help me make a decision.
