Opinions wanted - Sigs

I have a choice of deployment guns to get. I should only get 1 because I already spent my allowance on a couple of the rifles. So my choices are either: Sig 220R (.45) or 229R. (.40).

Is there any real big difference between them, or should they be fairly similar to each other or what I already have? I already have a 220 and 226 (9mm) and love them both. I am not opposed to having a completely duplicate gun in the safe (the 220), and I already reload for several other .45's. On the other hand - I do NOT own a gun in .40 S&W and do not have any reloading equipment for it, but it might be a fun new adventure. So the question becomes - get a duplicate to something I already have, but will cost me no additional money OR new caliber, new reloading equipment and componant costs.

I am in the sand right now so I have absolutely no possibility of trying a 229R before the order due date. If I do shake some more money free, I am definately getting both, but for right now (and marriage stability) I should stick to one.

if you had listed the 229 in 357 Sig, i would have voted for that. the .40 just doesn't do anything for me that the .45 or 9mm can't already do

Ill take the P220 as its single stack magazine is more friendly to my hands.

Was gonna say both, having both, but given the grip of the P229/40 works well for me, as does the thinner P220/45 so, it comes down to which gun is more versatile for me and, that would be the P229, as I own 3 of them and they give you more rounds per mag, as well, another consideration, being, not a bad thing.

Bottom line is you'll probably end up owning both guns and calibers.

I'd always take a 45 over a fill in the blank, but that's just me.

You already have the 220 so I'd say go for the 229. I had a SIG 229 in .40S&W and it was a great gun. I sold it while trying to trim the size of my collection (I have a small apartment and wanted to free up some storage space so some guns and gun related gear had to go, I also needed the money more than the guns I sold), once I start building up my collection again a 229 in .40 will be one of my first additions.

I think .40S&W is a great caliber. For carry I actually like it better than either .45ACP or 9mm (though, I prefer .45ACP to either 9mm or .40S&W for home defense due to lower risk of overpenetration with a lower velocity round). It is fun to shoot, nearly as powerful as .45ACP, usually can be found in higher capacity guns than .45 (and/or in smaller framed guns than .45), and is priced right (less than .45, and these days it isn't that much more than 9mm).

If you didn't already have the SIG 220 I'd say to go with whichever you'd prefer. Which caliber do you prefer (if you have a preference)? Which gun feels better in your hand? But since you have the 220 already, may as well try the 229 (if you are considering it you'll probably want it down the line if you get another 220 anyway).

The only thing, I'd probably look for a used 229 without the rail instead of the 229R or I'd go with one of the more specialized submodels (like the 229 SAS or Elite) instead of the 229R.

P229 in .40S&W, just get the .357SIG barrel shoot two great calibers out of one pistol. If you don't intend to cc this I would get the P226 in .40S&W/.357SIG, bigger is better.

Thanks for the all the input! I did not consider the 229's ability to swap barrels for the .357 Sig, but that definitely sounds interesting. I think I am leaning towards the 229, and new adventures in reloading.

I would go with the P220. First of all, you probably already have several mags and holsters, and if your like me a stock pile of hand loads for the P220. Plus the .45acp has been proven in combat time and time again. I would also imagin that .45acp ammo would be easier to come by than .40S&W or .357sig. Good luck.
