So there is a guy I know selling a Savage Model 1899 .30-30, JCHiggens(sears) M583.22(20ga bolt action), and some parts guns. The parts guns are an Arisaka missing a bolt, Cooey M84 12ga with bad barrel but nice blueing and stock, ??ArmsCo 12ga that needs work, Marlin M20 with rusted barrel and no stock. The Savage 99 and Sears 583 are the only complete firearms. The 20ga is in about 60-70% condition. The Savage 1899 has no blueing left, some pitting, crack in butt stock, chip in forestock, and still smells a little of seal oil after 20 years(the guy bought it from an old eskimo that used it as a seal rifle. When he bought it, he said it was coated in seal oil).

Al the firearms have been hanging on his walls for the last 10-20 years. He is asking $375 for the lot. I was thinking $150. Any thoughts? I figure the cost to get them up and going again would be greater than the finished value.

Sounds like a lot of junk to me, the only thing worthwhile would be the Savage Mod-99. That alone if you could get it for not much more than a 100 bucks for a project gun, it would be worth rebuilding for a decent woods gun. Numerich Arms should have the replacement parts you need, replacing the wood is easy along with all that seal oil soaked in. Get a bluing job from a local gunsmith or even a parkerization.
You might have to buy the lot for the one decent gun in the bunch, those other guns mentioned really have no value as they are. Talk him down if possible, 200 so he feels like he is getting something.

Only the savage 99 has any value or use and depending on condition. Be sure it shoots well and has a very nice bore before investing good money. What is the sub model of it. 99-e?? above or below that. I would put no value on the other firearms.

Yeah, my plan was to go for a package deal, but the 99 is what really interests me. I don't know what submodel it is. I plan on waiting till Thursday and then offering the $150 for the lot.

We don't really have any gunsmiths here, so I was planning on using the other 'pieces' as learning material for bluing myself.

Chris-bob, what does the barrel on the Arisaka look like? Also do you know if it is a model 38 or type 99?

I know the feeling of a project gun, bought a sporterized LongBranch Enfield for $50. All I need is the front stock set (walnut) and the missing hardware , have a source for LB or Savage marked parts. Just have not got to it yet, bought it 2 years ago. The action and barrel are primo.

I was planning on going back out Thursday with a cleaning rod and bore light to get the dust out of the barrel on the Savage and Arisaka. Couldn't tell when I was there last night.
