As the title says, I'm on the hunt for some plinking quality (read inexpensive) subsonic 300BO bullets.

I've had my 300BO for years and always run supers through it. Usually handload pulled 147gn bullets for cheap plinking fun but the suppressor bug has finally bitten me and I'll be plunking down a pile of money for one soon so I'm looking into subsonic rounds.

What is everyone's favorite?

I have H110 and 2700 on hand for powder, as well as a couple moderately fast rifle powders.

I have been having good luck with Barry's plated 220gr Spire Point and IMR 4227. Great quiet plinking combination that will still cycle an AR.

Left: Maker REX (all copper) I use for subsonic hunting. Right: Barry's plated.

After watching the initial workups on JRB when he was using 220 smks I swore coated lead had to be the best route. He did a few workups with coated he bought it may be worth a check. Someone's success can be yours if the builds are close. I really want one :(

I'm getting ready to assemble and suppress a 10.5" barrelled AR in .300 BO.
What length barrels are you guys suppressing?
I'm new to the caliber, suppressors and reloading so I'm all ears on any advice and will be trying a few of the recipes.

300BO.JPG I am shooting Steel Valley 220 gn HiTech coated lead from my 16" bbl Ar-15. Shoot great. Bullet .17, primer .08 and powder .04 equal bout 29 cents/shot. When I start casting my own 230gn should be about 12 cents/round. Pretty inexpensive shooting. Powder is Accurate 1680 subsonic load for plinking at range, no surpressor. Quiet enough for no hearing protection although I wear them cuz my hearing is permantly muted by F4 Phantoms. Bullets on top of container are 3 230 gn .45s, 1 .40 s&w, and a 160 gn .312 all from Lee 6 cavity molds and chrome powder coated. I also now have a 230 gn bt 2 cavity mold for 300BO and recently purchased a160 gn .266 6.5x55 powder coat mold from Arsenal Molds for Swede Mauser m96. So I got losts of work to do before warm weather. Good luck.

The Berrys 220 grain copper plated bullet on top of 4227 is hard to beat. The 4227 is nice and quiet, and the Berrys are one of the easiest to deal with, most cost effective bullets out there. Powder Valley is about the cheapest place I've been able to find them. Usually around $100/500... which is similar in price to the coated bullets... and you don't have to flare the neck to keep from scraping the coating off.

The 4227 works great in a pistol length gas system. In a carbine length... especially with a smaller gas port, a gassier/louder powder such as 1680 may be needed. H110 likes to work near max pressure, and doesn't get there with subsonic loads. I tried it and velocities were inconsistent until they were in the supersonic range. Also louder than 4227.

This all being said, for quiet plinking, I've gone to 147 grain subsonic 9mm in a PCC. Much cheaper to shoot and a ton of fun. RMR FMJ bullets to the front with that. Cost around $100/1000 for the FMJ... or about half of what store bought 300 BO bullets go for. A pound of HP38/W231 also goes a long way at 3.8 grains per charge. Lol

Good Luck!
