My wife and I travelled to Eugene for the Oregon Knife Show last weekend. What a display! There were over 400 tables of artwork the likes of which I had only before seen in magazines. http://www.oregonknifeclub.org/okcashow.html

I was looking for a bowie, but the more i looked the more overwhelmed I got. The production stuff was nice, but i was talking to knife smiths and began to really want something hand-made. But most of those was out of my range, $500 or more, often MUCH more! Then i stopped by a table by a young knife maker exhibiting at his first show. I liked one he had and bought it:

We liked his work so much that my wife ordered a true custom knife to be delivered in about 4 weeks. His name is Gary Griffin, out of Bend OR, and i have his permission to post his number: 541-317-1383. The knife I bought was $175, and began life as a leaf spring from a '72 Ford Truck.

Good deal!

Nice to first set foot on the slippery slope of custom knife collecting with a new maker. Nice to hear you wife may be waltzing out onto the ice also.

Now that's a knife. Sounds like you got a great deal on a very sturdy and stout Bowie knife. And kudos for giving a young knifemaker your business to get him started on his way.

Spring steel: recycled leaf springs are good blade material.

That's a good size and shape. Congrats. :)

I like the grip component on your revolver. Can you point me in the right direction to find one like it? Thanks.

The knife has a good belly for skinning and general cutting but nicely shaped tip for all sorts of knife chores. In short, you have an enviable cutlery piece there.
