My Model 10 is one of the 1970-era surplus guns that were all over the market a few years ago, in this case from Canada. Tons of holster wear but mechanically fine. The grips that came on it were some oversized rubber things that were pretty beat up. They were serviceable but that was all. Today I finally found a pair of grips at a swap meet for a square butt K-frame that looked almost brand new: all the finish, crisp checkering and nice figure in the wood. (Rosewood, maybe?) For 20 bucks I figured it was worth it. The seller told me they came off a Model 15 he put custom grips on shortly after buying it and these were just sitting around in his safe.
I installed them and was surprised at how different the gun (4 inch bull barrel) feels. The balance is improved and it feels steadier in my grasp. Don't know if I'll shoot it any better but I'll find that out this month. If nothing else, they sure look pretty. I was also surprised that these original-style grips, which are smaller than the rubber grips, are so comfortable in my very large hands.
This is one of my favorite plinking centerfire revolvers and I love all the history behind the Model 10. Getting it closer to its original configuration is nice. The only downside is that I feel I should have the thing reblued to look as good as the grips.
