I bought this thing several years ago as a dedicated, optic mounted hunting sixgun. All I had floating around at the time was a Burris 2-7x so I mounted it up and did some testing. Then I moved to TN and once I got the blackpowder bug, the .480 gathered dust. I've always wanted to outfit it with a 2x Burris or Leupold but with all the talk about Ultradots, I decided to try them. The UltraDot 30 was out of stock and I'd prefer a smaller dot if I decide to mount it on something else, so I opted for the MatchDot. Only to find out later that they don't fit between the two Ruger rings I just paid a hundred bucks for. Some enthusiastic research uncovered Leupold extension rings and they work perfectly! I had also been wanting to try some of the grooveless Hogue grips, in lieu of spending $350 with Herrett's and with a little work, I think they'll work fine. Another set in real rosewood is en route. Along with Bowen sights. Now to get it sighted in for a 355gr LBT at ~1300fps.

great looking gun, craig. is that the original target grey finish? how about the holster?

Jealous

I've been trying to buy my boss'es for years now. Ever since I shot his 480, I fell in love and even put it on my list Before the .460! I love the Rosewood grips on there.

Thanks!

It's the original target gray finish, which I really like. I never too much cared for the SRH until they came out with the .480 version. It's really grown on me. I've been scheming on what to do for a holster. The cutout for the scope mounts is what makes it tricky but I have some ideas. Probably be a while though, I have too many orders to fill to be farting around with that.

Got the rosewood monogrip yesterday and did a little shooting. Have yet to get out the chronograph but the load is a 355gr Oregon Trail gas checked LBT over H110 for around 1400fps. The new grip did well and will do better when I knock the top off the right palm swell.

Last group of the day, four shots instead of five due to a misfire. Around 2¼" at 50yds.

Shot one of those years ago and thought it was fantastic, and a surprisingly easy gun to shoot. Really quite the unsung hero of Ruger's line.

I got mine on a whim when CDNN had them on clearance cheap. Couldn't be happier I mounted a 2X Nikon on it for a while but just didn't like the way the silver scope looked so I ended up with a Bushnell 3200 Elite 2-6X. I've been shooting 415gr Hunter hardcast WFN at just over 1300 with WW296 but I have some 420gr Keith style SWC that have a pretty long nose and should be able to reach the same velocity with a bit less pressure.

Craig,
That's a great transformation! The revolver looks awesome with the scope, rings and grip that you've chosen. What combination of dot size and reticle did you use to shoot the target shown? What combination will you use for hunting? Good choice on the Oregon Trail bullets too.

Thanks! I used the smallest dot (2MOA) on the lowest brightness that I could see but the target was not the best choice. I was in a hurry and it was the first thing I grabbed. I'll use the same dot size in the field too, I imagine.

Great looking SRH! Ever since Ruger introduced the 480 I have been pining for it to be chambered in a more pack able platform. I was thinking either a 4" Redhawk or perhaps a five shot SBH. Unfortunately I don't expect that to be happening anytime soon... Still such a tempting platform I might be forced into the custom revolver market.
