Im trying to work up a few loads for the sierra match king 168gr...for my 700 police. Looking for your best loads for the tightes groups at all distances. Right now I will only be out to 100yds till I really get into a groove. Im sure the rifle will out shoot me for at least a year however durring break in I shot a couple .48" groups with federal eagle 150 grain but that was also @50yds...:D

This is where my 700 PSS likes it. Yours could vary.

Run a search and you will find a few more suggestions I'm sure.

Many like 43 grains of Varget with the 168 match kings, primer of choice.

There is a sweet spot in there somewhere.

Also, the old time tested tried and true match load was the 168 grain match king with 41.5 grains of IMR 4895.

It's almost a given, that the most accurate load in my or someone else's rifle will not be the most accurate in yours. There's no substitute for load development. Get yourself some IMR4895, RL15 or Varget and have at it.

The most accurate load for your rifle can be found only through trial and error. You should start with published COL and go to touching the lands (with minimal load as touching the lands will increase pressure) and experiment. My Savage 110 Tactical likes 39.5gr of IMR 4895 .003" off the lands with Winchester brass and Federal Gold Match primers. It took me about a year of experimentation to figure out the combination.
 
Here are good basics
#1 Varget and BR2 primers, RL15 and FGM210M primers, IMR4895/4064 and WLR primers
#2 Lapua or Win brass, skip the rest
#3 Start with standard COAL per mfg spec load work ups then manipulate the distance to the lands. In factory chambered rifle this might be a bit of a challenge.
 
I have had good luck with H4895 .43 gr with 150 gr matchking, I am going to try .435 and .44 grs next. I have some 168 matchkings coming and will try some loads for it using the H4895
 
My loads

Hey there. I shoot a .308 in a Rem. 700 PSS. My load is a one hole at 100 meters. 42.6 > AA2520 CCI BR primers. Same bullet you have.
A true PSS has .250 free bore. And you can not get the bullt that close to the rilfing. Some 700 Police have the same free bore issues.
I work on these often.
Some 700s were converted to a PSS by adding the stock. This then classed them as 700 PSS rifles. But from the factory they have the long free bore.
This is to make room for the extra long bullets for longer range shooting.
Other than that they recieve no factory tuning or mods. If you must know my set back for the bullet, it is long. .288" from the rifling.
I do not care for this but , that is the way it is. As I said a true PSS is born with this quirk.:)
My runs at 2600 fps to make the scope work right. (Springfield Gov. Model) Starts at 200 yards and has cross wires to 1000, a level in the bottom. They no longer make these. ??? No sure why.. The range finder works very well when you have known sizes.
 
My savage likes 168gr hornady match BTHPs with 41.5 gr of H4895. Took me about four batches to tune into that load, but my rifle loves it.
 
.308 Question

as mentioned above (hunter) What weight bullet and what kind, did you use for your Savage 110. I have the same rifle and am working on a load right now. Just curious what kind of groups you fired with this load also.

USSR, Truer words have not been typed... and besides... this is the biggest part of the fun... finding that elusive "perfect load" for ones firearms... :)
 
Reloder 15 powder with 165 grain SPBT. Gave me a 4 shot group of .913 inches at 200 yards with a Savage 99 lever. Of course, if I count the 5th shot it was 2 inches. That never fails. :cuss: :banghead:
But the next week I was pretty well able to repeat it, so I guess my rifle does like the Reloader 15.
 
My best loads have been with H335. The best so far for a 168gr bullets was 39 grains of H335 although 40 and 41 have been under an inch. I've played with Varget a bit and gotten good results but not quite as tight as H335 . .of course I believe that my shooting skills on any given day are a bigger variable than the powder. :)

PS - It seems like the 168gr bullets are less sensitive to seating depth than the 178's . .never completely understood why, but that's what my notes seem to show.
 
Don't over look the lighter bullets, even down to the 125gr weights, if the distances you plan on will allow them, they can be suprisingly accurate. Varget, Re 15 works well.
 
Winchester brass and primers, 175 gr SMK over 42 gr Reloader 15. Avg MV of 2615 fps. COL 2.8" 26" barrel (Savage 12FV)
First target: After shot one (off the bench), I clicked 4 right, then fired four shots. Three went through the same hole!

Second target: Three shots prone. Two through the same hole.

I had intendd another 5 shot group on the second target, but the fourth was waaaaaay right, indicateing the scope base had (yet again) come loose. Time for the Locktite.

The Rem has a slower twist rate, so the 168s might do better than the 175 SMKs. My Savage has a 1:10, and I shoot 600yds (F-TR), so the better BC of the 175's don't let them get pushed around by the wind so much.
 
RL-15 or Varget with: 168 or 175 SMK or 155 Lapua BTHP. Most all the combinations seem to shoot well at the charge my .308 likes. 165 Gamekings shoot well too. .308 Win seems pretty damn forgiving.
 
42gr. H335 w/168 SMK loaded as long as will fit in the mag. Shoots great in every rifle I have tried.

With experimentation, you can probably find a more accurate load, but that one will do pretty close every time.
 
Varget shoots well in both of my 308s but IMR4064 shoots the best with either 168s or 175s. Try the 175g AMax too, you might like it.
 
It will completely depend on you rifle. The loads given as 168gn SMK and 41.5gn H4895 is considered the best load for the M14, but many consider it slow in a turn bolt.

I have had great success with Vihtavuori Oy N135 and RL-15, but I've pretty much moved away from 168gn SMK in favor of 155gn Lapua scenars.
