Oh Hi Oh
I was trying out my new Walther P22 today. Nice gun and pretty accurate. I did encounter a consistent problem that has me puzzled.

The first round chambers by hand-racking the slide just fine, fires with no problem and ejects the round as it should.

The second round does not chamber. It does not get jammed, does not stovepipe. It's simply never grabbed from the magazine when the slide moves forward, after ejecting the shell from round 1.

If I rack the slide by hand round 2 chambers with no problem.

I sometimes have the same problem with round 3, but not too often.

After the first 2 rounds have been fired the gun chambers, fires, and ejects the remaining rounds without a hitch.

I can't figure out what would be causing this. It happens about 99% of the time. The serial number has the "L" prefix of the newer P22s, and the magazines have the "A" suffix in their model numbers, so they are all newer versions.

Any ideas?

I dont know what casuses it but I have the same problem with my P22, although not as often as you. It is the second round that just doesnt chamber. I too am curious about what others have to say.

This is only on the second round? and only the second round?

Sorta sounds like mag spring might be having issues. Does it do with all your mags?

Call Walther America....might not be in warrenty but might have an answer for you. Sounds strangely like a mag problem.

Only real problem Ive seen with a p22 was the slide catching on the hammer of Darrin's P22. Kinda weird it does it on the second round only

Yes, oddly enough it just happens on the second round. I'll follow your suggestion and see what Walther has to say.

Thanks

Sitting here thinking....is the gun properly clean and lubed? Maybe....just maybe....the slide is not sliding freely. And say the mag is pushing up pretty hard and also interfering with the slide. So it doesnt fully come back. After a few rounds that pressure is a bit lighter as the spring is starting to come out. And maybe the gun is looseing up.

Ok Im going for bones here....just brainstorming...

I thought it was good and slippery right out of the box but I'll grease it up and give it another shot (or 20 or 30). Sounds like reasonable cause and effect. Also sounds like a good excuse to make another trip to the range (as though I need my arm twisted!). I'll post the result.

Thanks!

P22: Clean & Lube, Break-in

I had a similar experience when my P22 was new (it's 8/02 built), and I was using cheap ammo.
What I did:
-Cleaned & lubed pistol as usual.
-Disassembled magazines & cleaned. They were gummed up right out of the box!
-Broke in the pistol with about 500 rnds of high velocity stuff, mini-mags, etc.

-Now I can fire almost anything.
If the above does not do it, call Walrep.

It tends to get a lot of residue around the extractor, after a lot of firing, and the mags get real dirty, so need attention every 500 rnds or so.

What kind of ammo are you using? A friend of mine had a problem similar to yours until he broke his in. Try shooting a couple of boxes of CCI Minimags through it and see how it acts after that.

Follow-up...

OK. I followed all of the suggestions that I got in response to my problem with my P22. Here's the latest...

I stripped the whole gun down and gave it an EXTRA good cleaning.

Lubricated all contact points with slideglide.

Took the magazines apart and gave them a good cleaning (I should know by now that brand new, out-of-the-box seldom means sparkly clean).

Went to the range and all worked well. Not a single problem. Last time I shot I used CCI Blazers. This time I used Min-Mags, some Stingers, and whatever odd assortment of .22 I had in my bag.

I'm happy with this gun! Affordable, accurate, and now dependable. This will make a good backpacking plinker.

Thanks to all for your help.

Sweet!!!! nothing better than a simple solution huh? Keep it simple stupid. What I always do when I have ANY problem is take the most basic thing and redo it. LIke if a gun is having issues....good cleaning of it see if that helps. Computers, reboot.... Its amazing what starting over does :D

Glad to hear the P22 is functioning as it should.
FYI, the Blazers never worked quite right in mine.
CCI mini-mags, Velocitors, Stingers, Greentag, and Standards all work fine in my P22, as does Remington Golden bulk, American Eagle HV, Remington Thunderbolts.

Winchester Wildcats, PMC Zappers, and Federal Bulk did not work well.

I use Brownells ActionLube, in the warm months, but straight CLP for 25 to 40 degrees. Any colder, and I don't shoot!

The slide contacting the hammer on mine was causing rounds 2&3 to fail to load. If I manually rack the slide, keeps on shootin'.

Periodically, the slide would actually 'hang' on the hammer. Walther America is giving it a check up to find/resolve the problem.

Today makes 2 full weeks without my P22. :(

Note: My problems were more around the 30% area, FWIW.
