is the Sig P220 a better choice for a shooter with smaller hands than the P226?

I do see the Sig store has the slimmed down P226 grips and am wondering whether the P220 with slimmest grips or the P226 with slimmest is smaller in circumference.

How is it that the P220 is 30.4 oz and the P226 is 34.4 oz? with same barrel length and similar dimensions.

Unfortunately, I can never get my hands on both at the same time.

And a followup, is the SP2022 a better choice for smaller hands? A pistol with decocker that is somewhat slimmer is my goal, but it must be available to Californians.

While the 220 is slimmer than the 226, it is a longer reach from the backstrap to the front strap as the frame is sized for the .45ACP

I've never measured the comparative circumferences, but the 220 with Hogue G-10 grips will feel slimmer the any 226 with the exception of one wearing the E-squared grips...but those grips force your hand further down the backstrap

The 220 is lighter for a couple of reasons. You're leaving out the width when comparing dimensions and also leaving out consideration of the reduced amount of metal in the larger caliber gun.

I think the SP2022 is an excellent choice for a smaller hand. Besides being the best value of the SIG DA/SA pistols, due to development cost being offset by the French contract, you have the option of smaller grip inserts, shorter reach to the trigger and a better DA trigger stroke right out of the box.

Bear in mind that the 2022 is the size of a 229

The 220 is slimmer, but it is a .45. Maybe shop for a used P225- basically a single stack 226 in 9mm. i don't think they make them any more.

Smaller hands? The SIG P239 is a single stack, compact DA/SA pistol that is still on the California roster.

When checking out the SP2022, note the shorter front strap. Imagine mag changes and if the shorter front strap will cause you problems pinching your strong hand during mag insertion.

Hammer fired guns with a decocker that seem small hand friendly to me are the Beretta PX4 (available in a variety of actions DA/SA with safety/decocker, DA/SA with decocker only, DAO, Constant Action), HK P2000 and P30.

I have small hands and I have had a P220, P226, P228, and currently have a P229R with the E2 grips. I would pretty much rate them in overall comfort and handling in reverse order as I listed them with P229R being the most comfortable and the P220 just slightly less than the P226. I would add that the P2022 is very much user friendly for someone with small hands as well.

Having recently looked at an older 220 with Hogue rubber grips, I can believe that. That 220 felt really good, almost like a 1911, and I was able to get a good high grip on it too, again like a 1911. Might have bought it if not for the rust on the slide...

I think you've explained why the E2 grips feel a little odd to me - I can't get that high grip I'm used to, even on other SIGs. As high as SIGs sit, I'm not sure what if any benefit there is from the hand having to sit lower, but I don't have any range time on an E2 SIG - how do those grips affect the shooting experience?

220 is slimmer but feels larger to me due to the distance front to rear. Try a 226 with E2 grips and a short reach trigger. Or maybe a 227.

With my P229R with the E2 grip I feel as though the gun fits into my hand better and that it's less of a stretch for my finger to reach the trigger. Bottom line would be that for me it's a more comfortable grip than that of the other models mentioned.

+1

I would look into the Sig 239.

Been carrying and shooting mine for 5+ years and really liking it.
FWIW, My wife has small hands and shoots the 226 and the 239 really well.

I haven't measured them but the E2 grip on my Model 226 feels exactly the same as the one on my Model 227R (the double-stack version of the Model 220). It would seem, then, that the Model 220, with its single-stack magazine, might fit a smaller-handed shooter better than the Model 226 with its double-stacked mag.

I have a friend that is an LEO for the Department of the Interior. They issue SIG P220's or SIG P229's, he is smaller in stature and has short fingers, he finds the P229 uncomfortable, and carries a P220. He did install the Gray Guns short reach trigger on it though to even further reduce his trigger reach.

I think you mean the Grayguns Intermediate Reach trigger.

The factory offers a shorter reach (thinner) trigger, not to be confused with the SRT (Short Reset Trigger)

I own several Sigs including the P220, P226, and P239, and my hands are modestly sized...medium if I'm lucky. I have thicker grips on the P220 and very slender grips on the P226...both feel great! In this fashion, it's too close for me to call on which takes up more hand...it's really about even. A P220 with the skinny grips could certainly be a great option for hands that could use something even a bit more slender. With no magazine capacity limit, I give the edge to the P226. But with a 10 round limit negating the 226's firepower advantage, the P220 would be my #1 without hesitation for a home defense/range type of gun. The P239 is my carry piece and is a fantastic option if even the ergo grip P220 is too much grip or you just prefer 9mm.

you know, honestly, I've shot well with everything I've chosen, my Beretta 92A1 is a bit thick for me and I still shoot well with it. I don't wear gloves, am in southern Calif, but want one good all purpose, all weather pistol. I'd pick a 10mm Glock but no way with gloves on I'd be happy with the tiny trigger guard spacing.

There is more to it than just circumference of the grip, you have to have trigger guard clearance too.
