Yes, I know all about asking legal advice on line and next week I will contact the PA Game Commission, but for now all I'm asking for here is an opinion.

In PA there is a general prohibition against hunting with a semi auto. What if I want to deer hunt with a garand, or use a piston AR-15 for coyotes?

Could I, by removing the operating rod and piston (I know I can do this in my POF AR), temporarily convert these rifles to straight pull repeater actions for the purposes of PA hunting. If so It would seem to be no problem to then block of a clip or magazine to 5 rounds so I could Have a nostalgia hunt in 30-06 or get to use my night vision compatible optic equipped AR for yotes.

What say you?

I have a friend who hunted with an SKS by removing the op rod. This is not official but my understanding was if the rod and piston are left at home and the gun must be operated manually then you would be ok. Let us know what fish and game says.

For deer, no semi autos. For small game (not sure how coyotes are classified), a plugged (3 round) shotgun is OK.

It sucks, but we are a backwards commonwealth.

45Badger,

We sure are! No semis and no Sunday hunting were a surprise in such a gun & hunter friendly state.
Yes, A semi shotgun can even be used for deer in Special Regulation Areas.

What I want to use is my POF piston AR at night for coyotes or raccoon. It's very accurate and has a Accupoint T1 on it that should work great with my PVS14 monocular. With the op rod removed it becomes a straight pull bolt action.

Now, as soon as I confirm with the game commission, all I need to do is modify a 10 round magazine to 5 by adding a block of some sort.

Just spoke to the PA Game Commission HQ and local office in the area I wish to use this in.

Here's the deal: If the rifle is modified so it can't be changed back in the field I'm ok. So, to do this Op rod and piston are left home and I should be OK.

Now, the monkey in the wrench is the local office inferred that since the rifle was designed as a semi and is by all external appearances a semi I should be prepared to do some splainin to any officers I run across.

May not be worth it...

May just have to buy another gun, dang:evil:

yes but "permanent" seems to be a term of art here.

a plugged to 3 rounds shotgun magazine is considered "permanent" for their purposes.

As long as it's not something you can readily change in the field it's "permanent"
