Packing a rifle for shipping

I have never shipped a gun before but now have sold one I need to pack up. It is a new Marlin with box etc. So I would appreciate some tips on how to pack eg, should I wrap it within the box like with bubble wrap, and what about the outside? Is the Marlin box enough maybe with some wrapping to cover labels or should it go into another box or what? Thanks much!

I sent a Savage back to the factory a while back and all we did was use the original box the gun came from the gun shop in, placing tape over Brand names etc. One thing to remember is the Box cannot say anything about it being a firearm on the outside or the Post Office will not send it. UPS returned it in a identical box.

I've shipped a couple in hard Dorko cases. I always tape around the case good and zip tie the handle a few times. Both arrived in perfect shape.

I would use the factory box then cover that box in a layer of cardboard cut form other boxes. Then wrap it all in the heavy brown shipping paper. That way no one can really tell what is inside unless they open it.

It's my understanding that FedEx and UPS will not accept packages that are wrapped in brown paper.

Last time I shipped a rifle, I went to the local WalMart and got them to give me a mfg box for one of the rifle cases they were selling, since they take them out of the box for display. You might be able to fit the original box inside one of those.

I sent a rifle off for a new barrel and was recommended to buy an inexpensive gun case and ship it in the cardboard box the case came in. Went both ways by Fedup safely.

Thanks all. I have a cheap hard case and I was thinking of sending it in that and just taping it shut with lots of duct tape. Think that would be ok with UPS who I was planning to use?

CMP boxes are the best for long gun shipping. Order a Garand and reuse the box.

The most important detail is use plenty of energy absorbing packing between the muzzle and the end of the box.
Several layers of corrugated cardboard works well. And cut several to fit around the muzzle, or bubble-wrap it so the packing stays in place.

Anything to absorb the in-line impact if some UPS Gorilla drops it on the muzzle end of the box when he throws it off the truck.
