.Breaking: Otis McDonald, champion of Supreme Court victory, passes

April 4, 2014

Otis McDonald, the man whose name will be forever synonymous with Second Amendment activism for his victory over Chicago’s handgun ban, died today, according to his nephew, Dr. Frederick Jones, who spoke with this column. He was 79.

Mr. McDonald, who was 76 at the time the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in McDonald v. City of Chicago that its handgun ban violated the Second Amendment, and that the right to keep and bear arms was incorporated to the states via the 14th Amendment, had been suffering from a lengthy illness.

"Otis truly loved people," Mr. Gura recalled to Examiner. "He was universally kind, patient, and positive, and wanted very much to see his neighbors enjoying their freedom to which they are entitled. We all owe Otis a debt of gratitude that he could fulfill that wish."

Very sad, I wish him peace

His legacy is freedom, I can't imagine a better gift

RIP! A man who wasn't afraid to stand up for what is right... especially in a place like Chicago!

I remember the first time I saw Otis. I was at the iGold rally in Springfield and I was like "who is this little old black man they have up on stage?"

Then he was introduced to speak and I was like "Oh WOW!!!!"

I turned to my son (who I'd pulled out of school for the day to go lobby), and said "Do you see that man? thank that guy if you get the chance, Son, he gave you something that even I couldn't provide to you, as a father."

The Rosa Parks of our firearm civil rights. He should be awarded a posthumus CCW permit.

Thank you for posting this. I doubt I would have heard about it otherwise...seems his passing has been ignored by major media sources. Please correct me if I am wrong, but a search of the Fox News website did not turn up anything, and I did not notice anything in my local newspaper. Even the NRA Website gave it about 3 lines. It sounds like Mr. McDonald was the type of person who did not seek recognition, but I agree he should be celebrated as a hero.

One of the manufacturers should do a limited run of the "Otis McDonald" model of their popular handguns.

Mr McDonald took an oath to Support and Defend the Constitution of the United States. For some of us even after we have fathfuly completed our contract we still hold on to those values. To you Sir we all owe you our utmost gratitude!

My prays for you and your family, Rest in Peace.
