I will be traveling through NY/NJ and will not be taking my handgun because of the laws there, so, my question is, is carrying pepper spray or having it in the car legal?

I want to bring my Bear Spray because the last time I went camping in the state we are going to we ran into a mountain lion, thank god he hightailed in the other direction because I had nothing to defend myself with, because you guessed it, no firearms permitted there either.

As far as I know carrying pepper spray on your person in NY is illegal, probably Jersey too. They both have very restrictive laws. Watch what type of knife you acrry also.

Pepper spray is legal to carry on your person in NY. As long as you are over 18 (or is it 21...) and not a felon, you can carry it. I bought it for my wife a few years back and she keeps it on her keychain. She recently went into a county government building and the deputy told her he'd have to hold onto it while she was inside. There was nothing else said of it. Hope this helps.

probably Jersey too.

Not true.

Check the law. The legality is based on the size of the container.

No more than three-quarters of an ounce (.75 oz.) of chemical substance based on NJ 2C:39-6i.

we ran into a mountain lion
Chances in mid town Manhattan?? Slim:eek:

That size is illegal in NJ. That's larger than my can on my duty belt when I carried the stuff. The small legal sizes are sold in many sporting goods and chain stores. It's mostly all a 2% Cap formula.

Long Gun

You could take a long gun with you to New York. I have no idea about what the process is to legally take one to New Jersey....probably hunting..target shooting...that sort of thing as a non resident because non residents actually can take handguns easier to NJ than NY. You can't take post ban 'assault' style rifles to NY or NJ.

If you've got a good pump shotgun...load it up with slugs. That will work for black bears up close at a campsite. I'd trust that a lot more than I would pepper spray. Slugs should do the job on mountain lions too..take you some buckshot and you've got you a good hotel protection gun, since you can't normally take a handgun to NY (except for NRA matches like IDPA, IPSC).

The circumstances under which you can take a firearm, longgun or handgun, into jersey are highly restrictive.

It can be done, but you really need to read the statutes and double check that you can claim a legitimate exemption that applies to your specific circumstances.

The general rule of thumb is unloaded, trunked, separated from ammo, and directly to or from a recognized shooting activity, and even then check twice.

If you get a wide-mouth jar of habanero peppers and grind them all up, to make a "salsa," the stuff would be so hot it would burn your skin. Wear rubber gloves while grinding and cleaning up. Toss that into someone's face if they are attacking you.

For a while, I made my own habanero salsa. The juice was running up my arm. When I was done, after about an hour or so, my arm was so "on-fire" I could not do anything to get rid of the feeling. I had a bright red rash that was probably a first to second degree burn.

Also, don't forget the good Hornet & Wasp Killer. If you get one that shoots 25 or 30 feet, you will have good aim at the intruder's face. I would think that would stop anyone unless they have a gas mask on.

It is legal to have and use pepper spray, but currently it is illegal for any stores in new york to carry any police-issue type pepper spray or for any company to ship them to a new york address... however bear spray may be different... i'm pretty sure they can be bought. If not... you could take a drive to a wal-mart in connecticut or if you have a friend who live sout of state have them ship it to your friends house and then ship it to your house. And remember don't let any laws prevent you from defending yourself... your rights are endowed from your creator and not from the government, if you feel like you are going camping and feel that you and your families lives are in danger then you have every right to buy carry/use whatever implements you need to protect yourself, and that will hold up in court if the judge is a non-political judge

A can of Easy Off oven cleaner with a good stream nozzle works well. Used to teach self defense as a part of a rape prevention course. At the end of my class i gave all the ladies a small can of Easy Off with a stream nozzle.

One day i got a call from a LEO who told me that one of my students had been attacked and had used Easy Off on the perp. The attacker was blinded in one eye and had severe chemical burns on his face and neck.

Using Easy Off on an attacker in NJ or NY is most likely illegal.

That's ridiculous. Is it not legal for a person to do whatever they have to do in order to protect themselves? What if all they have is a Easy Off?
Yeah, but the bleeding heart liberals would be screaming about how inhumane it is - just like their campaign against the cruel and unusual punishment of those sentenced to die for murder............

Using Easy Off on an attacker in NJ or NY is most likely illegal.

That does seem very hard to believe and I, for one, don't believe it. I can't imagine any District Attorney prosecuting a woman who, while being attacked by a potential rapist, protected herself by using [gasoline, Easy Off, hornet spray, cleaning solvent, etc.].

If that's illegal, would bashing the intruder on the head, with the same Easy Off canister, and knocking him out also be illegal?

If someone is being attacked I can't imagine anything is legally off-limits.
