Had no sooner bought an 1845 Allen & Thurber 6 barrel pepperbox then the hammer spring(?) fell off in the grip. I have tried repeatedly to put it together with the small square keeper and the curved spring but it will not stay together. Any help will be appreciated.

A picture would help. I don't know if mine is the same as yours, but in mine the mainspring is held in place by a lug on the spring itself butting against a projection in the frame. The square head nut holds the hand spring. The right (front) end of the mainspring is not supported by anything but the tension screw.

I'll attach a picture.

Allen & Thurber

Hi Jim --
Please accept my apology. I have been out of town and other things came up. I just happened to check the website and unbelievable. Yours is the closest answer I have had. However the square nut you mention was not in your photo. That seems to be what is not holding the spring onto the hammer part. It just falls off. There is just no way it will secure the 2 pieces together. Would it be possible for you to show me the upper portion of your photo?
Thanks so much, Art

Need a Allen & Thurber Pepperbox mainspring

I have an Allen & Thurber Pepperbox with a broken mainspring. Any sources? I've seached for a couple of weeks now with no luck.

Is it possible to weld it? Mine is broken half-way up the tension side. Thanks

I have to apologize for not checking on this thread. Capt Art, if you are still interested, the square nut is the shiny part above the end of the mainspring. It holds the hand spring and has no contact with or bearing on the mainspring.

I know of no source of that spring, and I doubt welding would hold up. The reproductions I have seen are made differently internally, so I doubt a solution lies in that direction. You will probably just have to have one made or try to improvise something; I recommend the former and try to get someone who will make one like the original. It will cost more, but I wouldn't want something like a coil spring in an antique gun.

If you take the spring pieces out, just about any machine shop can make one. They just can't keep the gun, you would probably have to bring it all for measuring but that's it. I'd just look up a local shop and see what they can do, will be cheaper than a gunsmith.

There are certainly no Machine Shops around here anyway, capable of making a Spring, Capable of Forguing or Tempering or anything really, all they do is squint at a Cad Cam Mill and 'billet' stuff.

Any competent general Blacksmith could make a Spring, long as his competence extends to Tempering as well as Forging simple things.

If you can not find anyone locally to do it, I'd do it for you, but I'd need the old one to copy, which would be easy to Mail, and, some detailed images of where it goes, so far as possible anyway.

I know the Frames on these hide much of where it goes...so...

Do you have all of the parts of the broken Spring?

Can you post some images of the Pepperbox, and, close ups of the interior Grip area?

Dixie Gun Works used to have a lot of parts for old pepperboxes, and other oddball black powder pistols.
