Howdy folks. I want to let you know that the first (and biggest) piece fell into place for building my own personal range. I was talking to my best friend from high school who lives in North Dakota. I was mulling over the idea of making my own private range for friends and relatives. Here's part one of this post

While I was talking about it he offered a field for me. I haven't been there in over 4 years so my estimations are probably off, but it's about 500-800 yards long and about the same wide. I have free access whenever I want and I can build whatever I want on it.

Why is it free? It used to be a cattle pasture, but the Prairie Dogs have infested it. It's wasted land for the farm so the only cost to use this land is if I see a Prairie Dog, I have to kill it when I'm on that land.

Let me know if you need any help "paying" for the land.

Is it in the "center" of a larger farm? If it is 500 yards x 500 yards, that is around 50 acres. I have done a lot of shooting on plots of that size. I think building a suitable backstop for all but shooting prairie dogs is still a good idea.

The more towards the center of the property the more inclined I would be to build a more permanent structure. Unless you have the deed though, the property isn't yours so I wouldn't put anything "too" nice on there. But a lot can be built for just a couple hundred $$$ and some sweat.

You know, I can drive over and start paying for the land for you. I just happen to have a couple of new reach out and touch guns for PD's I need to try out.

Well, my gracious volunteers...If you want to "help" pay for the land use, you'll have to talk to the land owner. I'll vouge for you but if your actions make me have to post about your idiocy (spelling for a made up word??) I'll chop you into little pieces. J/K.

I can arrange to get the Backhoe to build my berm for the price of fuel. What would you build a non-permanent range out of? I can build whatever I want, but I want to keep things as a temporary fixture (since I can only shoot there 2 times a year until 2010) so it can all be stored in a garage until he wants to use it or I come home. What are your choices to build a temp-range in a short amount of time (assuming you have most tools you'll need and frames and targets already assembled.)

Have you considered a 360 degree range? Just make a 50 meter spiral and now you can have the best IDPA matches! You can also do some interesting tactical training (and that doesn't even have to be 360...maybe 300 degrees so the instructor can be in there).

You may also want to make a smaller 25 meter range for pistols.

My buddy who offered me the land said until his grandmother sells the property to him, I can have nothing permanent. But he also told me that anything I use I can Stow in his garage (because he wants to shoot too). Does anyone know how to set up an IDPA combat range?

Because it will seldom be used, and has to be removed when you leave, you should look at a couple of booger benches (or something similiar) and some target stands that are easy to move (The Beast from Brownells comes to mind).

At the same time you can order police targets from them, or some IDPA targets from Midway.

Here is a packet that talks about IDPA and the layout of targets.
