Just looking for a decent sight for my new flat top AR. I admittedly know very little about red dot optics and haven't done much research at all. Saw that woot has a deal on the above sight for $130. At that price (relative to the amazon price) it seems like a steal, but I still don't want it breaking, and I don't want to feel the need to upgrade it anytime soon, so I thought I'd ask the high roaders. I can't seem to find much info/reviews online. My main questions are:

1) Would it be a decent sight for casual range/plinking use? If I get into 3-gun comps down the road would it work?
2) Would I need to buy higher mounting rings for it to clear the front sight on a typical AR? The pics of the sight I have found online mounted on AR's they seem to have different mounts than the ones shown on amazon/woot.

If anyone has any experience that would be great. If anyone can just give me a go/no-go based on the price and specs, that is also appreciated. I think the deal is only good for one day so time is of the essence. :) Thanks in advance all!

The price looks good, compared to the amazon price. That said, I wouldn't spend that much on a red dot. Spend that money on a case of ammo or a training course. Either will be more beneficial in the event that you have to use the gun.

Thanks Rail Driver, but let's assume I am planning to take a few classes and buy plenty of ammo regardless of the purchase of this (or any) red dot..... In other words the purchases are not mutually exclusive of one another. I know everyone's equipment-to-training budget ratios vary, and I could probably benefit spending less on equipment and more on training, but I definitely don't think a red dot puts me too far in mall ninja territory. My goal is to spend more on equipment AND training this year :)

Also although I appreciate and respect the suggestion for training in the event I need to use the gun in a real SD application, the red dot would not be strictly for "serious" use. It is also just for fun at the range too :) Hence I don't want to pay $400+ for a sight but also don't want to skimp by on a bare bones $30 optic.

I've never heard of the PFI but if you got it what type of mount woud you use? Does your sub $400 price include a mount? The Aimpoint Pro is an amazing deal at $400 as it comes with what is essentially an M2(i think) and a quick disconnect mount. Seperate you're looking at well over $600.

I am not sure about the mount. It appears to come with something to mount to a weaver rail, but I assume I'd need a higher picatinny mount to clear the front sight, but I don't think I'd need quick-detach capability. The $400 wasn't a fixed price. Actually I would prefer to be under $200 for the whole setup considering it will mostly just be for casual fun and share time with irons and regular scope. Maybe I will hold off on this purchase though until I do more research on the plethora of options out there.

If my budget were $200 i'd probably go with the Vortex Sparc or Strikefire. If it was absolutely only for plinking i'd consider something by Truglo as well. I'm not saying those are better than what you posted but based on the experiences of others i know that is my advice.

Thanks Justin, yeah the Vortex Strikefire is up there high on the list of budget red dots. Seems to get good reviews and at least it has earned itself a good reputation for what it is.

I don't know about the quality, but I saw the deal earlier, and it looked nice. Checking out their site, they have the MSRP as being $400 something. They have a few reviews on their site too from some reputable magazines.
