Pheasant hunting makes me wish I'd grown up in areas that had them. I've been to South Dakota twice to hunt them and it was some of the most fun hunting I've ever done. I have an open invitation to go back every year with a friend, but sadly life is too busy.
Pheasants are really slow and fly straight up when they take off. You get use to hunting them and next time a woodcock takes off in front of you, you just look at your hunting partner and say "did you hear something?". They will spoil you big time.
I hunted the opener near Kennebec, SD, great 3 day hunt with Halverson Hunts, LLC. limits everyday. Excellent Guide, Good dogs, excellent food plots, plenty of roosters I used Win rooster XR ammo in 12 ga 2 3/4 in #5. when I hit the birds they were stone dead. may of my shots were 35 to 45 yds. I used a Beretta A-300 mod choke. May use full choke next time as most of my shots were longish as I was mostly a blocker.
