This is the safety manual for the Springfield Armory XD. information contained within it appears to conflict with common wisdom on these boards.

for example:

Always keep the chamber unloaded

keep barrel pointed at target for 30 seconds after unsucessfull fire before clearing

always use a holster with a covering flap

store gun unloaded and with ammunition in a seperate place

never carry any handgun in your pocket or purse

do not change your guns trigger pull

what is your opinion on this conflict? can you help resolve it? frankly I find the manual a LITTLE too conservative on this issue, but i certainly owe it to them to think carefully before ignoring their rules.

note: I do not yet own ANY firearm, so feel free to treat this as a theoretical, rather than immediate danger, matter.

You need to remember the lawyers are writing the manual. The information is good but it's intended to minimize the liability of the manufacturer. As with anything in life, you need to take in all available information and then use good sense in deciding what to do. There is no arguing the theory that an empty chamber makes a safer carry. The problem is it also makes a slower response to trouble. You need to decide what's worth more to you. When you chamber a round, you decrease your response time, but you also take on the responsibility of a fully loaded gun.

The holster with a cover sounds like an older manual. What I recommend is a retention holster.

Yep. All about the L-word. Same reason that Q-tips say "do not insert into ear canal." Not that you can't, they're just eliminating any responsibility in the event that something goes wrong.

There was a list of suggestions given with a CCW ,one of them was "only carry your pistol when you are going to need it" !!!

It's terrible that manufacturers are forced to add all this added crap along with the guns (and even ON the guns in some cases). I doubt any manufacturer wants to put a billboard for safety precautions on the sides of their guns, but thanks to a flawed system, not doing so might mean that Bubba Joe would sue said company because he shot himself in the leg.

Here's my favorite stupid CYA/liability item:

I bought laser grips for my S&W. They came with a warning label that you're supposed to affix to the side of the gun. The warning states that the laser is dangerous and should not be pointed at anyone.
