Great facility. Why is Mike Raahauge such a rude grump? He wrecks the whole thing.

dave3006, you have the wisdom of King Solomon my friend. Mike is a gruff guy, but somehow the people keep showing up.

I wish he’d post the scores sooner and fix some of the machines, but since it’s the closest Clays course to my house, I’ll keep going.

I brought my 10 year old son to Raahauges for his Hunter's Safety class last Saturday. I had been to Raahauges once before. When I was signing in, he had a stack of papers for the students right next to me for the class. He was handing them out. I simply took one. Mike Raahauge very rudely told me to leave "his stuff" alone. I looked at him in disbelief. I was waiting for him to smile or indicate he was joking. Nope. He meant it. If it was not for the fact that I got my son up at 5:00am for this class, I would have told him what to do with his stuff.

The guy is pyscopathic. His behaivor during the rest of the day confirmed it. I think he knows he has the only place to shoot and this gives him the freedom to express his true self (not a pretty one).

My son passed. I do not think we will be going back soon.

Why is Mike Raahauge such a rude grump?

Maybe so, but he does let you shoot. Pretty much leaves you alone. You can't beat that .. as long as the participants are safe.

Huh? He lets you shoot? Shooters pay money and he provides a service. He thinks that because he is the sole source provider, he can demean and insult his customers. The best judge of a persons character is the way they treat someone who is at their mercy.

I do not want to shoot my shotgun so bad that I will allow anyone to treat me like that. My second trip there was my last. I have too much respect for myself than that.

I am actually surprized that more people do not have the same reaction. He is this way because people tolerate his behavior.

Dave

- Five other fathers at the safety course said the same exact thing without any prompting from me.

Dave:

Please read between the lines. I'm from Northern California and have only been to this range twice. My interaction was very positive and so I admit that I don't have your introduction. My father practices at his range once, or twice per week. He has also had a very positive interaction with Mike, but then again my dad doesn't say much. He is able to go out, set up his targets and shoots from the holster. That is something rare these days. So, I might not like the guy..no experience personally, but I would need to be really offended to give up the freedom of practicing at will for IDPA, IPSC, or just practice outside the constraints of paper target practice with a rangemaster breathing down my neck. Heck, in my area you can't even shoot faster than one shot per two seconds and silhouette targets lead to mass murder. I'm not minimizing your experience, nor supporting rude behavior, just explaining my remarks.

Hi Dave,

Please don't let one bad experience turn you off to shooting / hunting. There are other places to shoot. Prado is right down the street and they have trap, skeet, 5-stand, handgun and rifle.

ysr...

p.s. like I said, Mike is a gruff guy, but that's part of his charm

Thanks YSR. It would take more than Mike to do that. I belong to West End Gun Club. I shoot rifles and skeet there. I was actually more worried about his effect on the non-shooters that are introduced to the sport. I am hardcore for life.

Several years ago, I took a friend that was rabidly anti-gun to a skeet facility in Irvine, CA. He was willing to give it a try. Unfortunately, the people that we were paired with displayed every bad stereotype of the ugly gunowner you could imagine. Foul language, unsafe behavior, and general uncoothness. I was so embarrassed. He never tried it again and believed the opinions he had on us "gun nuts" even more strongly.

Sometimes, we are our own worst enemies.

I've shot at the Irvine place before. I think it was called the South Coast Gun Club? Off of Jeffery and the 5, right?

I used to shoot handguns there. I only started shooting clays about 3 years ago and it was closed by then.

You want to shoot someplace where the people are butt-heads, try the trap / skeet field in San Clemente. Those guys are just plain rude.

Hey Guys,

Been there and done that.....Sporting Clays is a great way to destroy a Trapshooters ego, but it was great fun.

I agree that Mike is more than gruff, in fact he's downright rude.....

My best shooting buddy dispises him and he's only been there once!!

Both my boys took their Hunter's Safety Classes there. One in '97, the other in '99 and I have to admit, that the first time I met Mike, I was just about as angry as Dave. Had my son not been there to see my dark side, I probably would have reacted very poorly to Mike's mouth. But after a couple trips and figuring him out, he's really not (that) bad.....at least to those who give him a smart comment back. He's always got something smart to say, but the Hunter Safety Classes really are a pain in the *$$ for him. He's dealing with people who are not on time, not generally knowledgeable, confused, etc. and to top it off, quite a few people in today's world just don't care about rules and what is and isn't allowed. These classes are pretty large and if someone wasn't in charge and truly in control, they would never get started, let alone finished. He makes sure that "everyone" knows who's in charge from the beginning and that they better pay attention. While I didn't need his attitude and obviously Dave doesn't either, there are quite a few people who do. I'm not defending him, he can be a jerk. But give him a couple more chances and don't be intimidated by him. If he smarts off, just be the same way with him....it's worked for me :) We ain't buddies by any means, but his bark is worse than his bite and once he recognizes that you aren't going to take his crud, he'll treat you differently.

Sgt, you made a good point about showing people you won't take their crap in life. People (bad ones) usually treat you in a manner that you let them. If there ever is a next time, I will sarcastically give him crap back.

There was about 150 people at the class. At $35 bucks a head, that is about $5000. I don't know what he had to give the state. However, I think he made out pretty good. The other thing I did not like was how some of the fathers were helping their sons and daughters during the test. We were allowed to help the kids if they did not understand the question. However, one father literally had a debate with his daughter on every single question. It was pathetic. My ten year old even noticed it. The Raahauges guys should have been on top of this.

Hey Dave,

I know he's not hurting for money! between the deal he has with Turner's (which they do take a piece of) for the Hunter's Safetey Classes, he's got the Sporting Clays Range, the handgun and rifle ranges, a trap range over on the East side off of Corydon, the pheasent hunting, duck hunting, dog training, etc. He's got I don't know how many acres that they raise crops on and I'm guessing that all this land was left to him by his family....? I think he grew up with an attitude ;)

Now there are two things that may be a problem for him.......I've heard that work on Prado Dam will start this year, to eventually raise the water level there.....a lot of his property (or the Corps of Engineers) property, is directly in the flood plane should they raise the water levels very much. Couple this with the division of the "Ag Preserve" out there between the cities of Chino, Chino Hills, Ontario, Corona, and I believe Mira Loma and he's got a future problem with a possible silver lining. In the not too distant future, all those dairies and farms will be gone. And in their place will be thousands of houses, owned by suburbanite soccer moms and dads, who just don't understand why there has to be an evil shooting facility in their neighborhood:rolleyes: Couple that with an increase in insurance for the ranges being so close to suburbia and the fact his usable land will surely go up in value in the next few years because of all this......I'm guessing when the time comes, he'll sell it all off and make a tidy sum. Then he'll probably retire to some tropical island, after he buys it outright and sit around insulting his drunken, sunburned, paying guests all day !!! :banghead:

The only thing that's saved him and Prado this long is the Dam and the Ag Preserve and they're both getting overhauled. Until the divorce last year, I lived in a nice new house overlooking Prado and my totally yuppie neighbors complained constantly about the noise from the ranges......it's only a matter of time before it's all gone and we'll have to drive to Lytle Creek to shoot. Personally, I loved the sound, though hearing all that shooting everyday, sure made it hard to stay away from the range;)

Anyway, I hope you try shooting there at least once....It's a heck of a lot of fun and Mike needs the money for those charm classes he should be taking:D

Take Care, Sgt

P.S. I remember when my boys took the classes and I agree with you about some of those kids.....but then they are reflections of their parents aren't they? Both my boys passed on their own, if they were too stupid to understand what was being taught, I wouldn't let them shoot. I was only there for moral support and to make sure Mike, or anyone else, didn't screw with them. Both boys outscored most of the adults there, but then even at ten years old, either of them could have given the "Gun Safety" lectures from memory :D I was raised to believe that my most important job, was to teach my children about life and so far it looks like I've done a pretty good job. Sounds like you are as well and I wish you continued success in that regard!!

It could be Corps of Engineers, or Mike could be leasing the ROW and facility to anyone.....You might ask him and then post your findings....

I value my ears too much to ask him that :D
