I just moved to the San Diego area (Fallbrook-north county) last month, and now I'm looking for places to go shooting. I saw Iron Sights today in Oceanside as I was driving home, looks like an indoor place. Any places where I can shoot a rifle out to at least 100 yards or more? Also, what are some good gun shops in the north county area for me to check out?

You might want to do what I do. Drive about 50 miles east on highway 94, just passed Jacumba. Take anyone of the numerous dirt-roads off the highway. Just be careful, if you go right (south) you will drive right into mexico if your not careful. I almost did that the first time I went there. The only reason I didn't go into Mexico, I was right next to a post marking the border. But, before you go, stop by a SD Sheriffs sub-station and get a map of the county outlining where you can and can't shoot. There are a couple small areas out there that are off-limits to shooting. The map usually costs $1, but the last time I got one the little old lady gave it to me for free.

If you find a better place let me know! :)

south bay rod and gun club has a 50, 100, 200, 300 yrd outdoor range. They have a website too. Google it.

Iron sights is an indoor place with twelve 25 yrd rifle lanes and about ten 15 yrd pistol lanes. If you are a Marine (no other good reason to be in fallbrook), Iron Sights has an AR15 you can practice with for qual. They also sell firearms.

There is a range between oceanside and vista on highway 76. It is next to the small airport that is there. I forget the name, but its a nice place.

Pala rifle range:

I think the targets go out to 700m or so.

There is another range called Escondido Fish & Game Range on Guejito Road, at the East end of Lake Wohlford near Valley Center. That range only goes out to 100 yards or so.

It's funny, the map on the web page is wrong. The range is further north than indicated on their map. It's before (north of) Bear Valley Lane.

All this talk about my former stompin' grounds.....

We used to go out hiway 8 to Borrego (not Borrego Springs), cut off there and go about a mile east of town and turn on Painted Gorge road. There were some trailers etc. but keep going and there are some cool spots; it is administered by BLM. You can shoot what you like, and set up targets as far away as you want. Just pick up your trash.

So Travis, you are in PB, huh? I used to work at the Old PB Cafe and go to the Green Flash or Old Ox......those were good days but I'm glad I'm back in the Northwest.

Welcome to San Diego. You wont need your cold weather gear out here.

If you go down to Kearny Mesa, there is a place on Ruffin Road called American Shooting Center (http://gotammo.com/). Nice place, but the owner is a little touchy. They also do (did?) small arms classes for the Marines out of Miramar. They also have a few interesting long guns and a wide variety of pistols for rent. Their range prices are on the high side.

There is a place in downtown San Diego on Kettner Blvd called Discount Gun Mart (I crap you negative on that name) that has an indoor range. Nice people, but they jerked me around on a couple of special purchases a little too long. Have never been on their range, and they also rent, but only pistols.

Iron Sights in Oceanside is the best indoor place in San Diego that I've been to. I am willing to drive from Poway to Oceanside to shoot there. Good people, good prices, and they aren't anal about you picking up your own brass. Weekdays are the best, of course, and they are open pretty late; 10:00PM I think. (Note: I do not work for them, nor am I getting money for this endorsement.)

I have never been down to the South Bay Rod and Gun Club, so cannot comment. Certainly, that's where a lot of the CASS people seem to hang out.

The range out in Ramona has been closed for lots of years, or so I've been told. Too many houses grew up nearby, and liability got too high.

There is a skeet only range near MAS Miramar. I've never been out there (I don't own a shotgun, yet) but have heard nice things about it. I dont know how many stations they have, but it seems to be enough to keep most people happy.

I used to go out to the Pala Campground, but they closed it for a few months a couple of years ago; I do not know if it ever re-opened (judging by the pervious messages, it has). I quit going out there and paying their $20 range fees when some friends introduced me to some nice places out in Ocotillio Wells (it's a wide spot on 8 out in Imperial County). There are some BLM areas that a shooter can easily get 100 yards (if not more) without danger of hitting anyone. (Plus, the weather is getting cool enough that you don't need to worry about getting 2nd degree burns from your black guns sitting out in the sun for five min.) The real downside is that loong drive (maybe 100 miles each way) from Fallbrook. Of course, if you car-camp and make a weekend trip out of it...

Hope this helps.

Almost forgot:
On base at Camp Pendelton there are pistol and skeet ranges. I believe that they are open to civillians. Not sure on the times but you could call MWR to find out.

Used to shoot a lot at Kitchen Creek Rd (long range), and Bear Valley Rd (short range) open shooting areas just off I-8 about 60 miles east of the beach. Don't know if they are still open. Bear Valley was a series of nooks that allowed a small group to pretty much claim one for their own. Kitchen Creek was wide open and required a watchful eye on the habits of one's neighbors. A call to the forest service should tell you if they are still usable.
