I am soooo gonna pay for what I'm about to post....

Went to the range today and rented a G17. I've been wanting to try a 9 mili for a while now to see what I thought. I was hoping to get a SIG for rental but the range didn't have 'em; anyways, back to the story. Rented G17 and 100 rounds, the best that I can describe the experience is holding the tupper ware lid from my lunch container and having somebody hit it with a hammer. I did alright as far as shooting straight goes, but I still didn't like the feeling. Couldn't stand the trigger and could never easily hit the mag release, even with my big hands. :scrutiny: Haven't tried the SIG yet but I would still like to. Maybe I'm just acustomed to manipulating the 1911. It's a perfectly fine handgun but not my first choice.

Glock is probably the worst example of grip shape that I have ever had the displeasure of firing.

My FN Forty-Nine is great. The Walther P99 is even better (ergos that is) the SigPros are alright. The S&W Sigma line is pretty comfy. You could also spend a lot less than a Glock and get a Steyr.

-edit- The above may leave a bad impression of Glocks in the mind of a new shooter. I am not saying Glocks are bad guns, quite the opposite. They just aren't comfy in my hands. I was thinking of getting a police turn-in G20 from CDNN and sending it to Robar for a grip reduction. I'd like to hold a reduced grip Glock if possible before committing though.

every time i pick up a block, i can't help but think to myself "gee, why not just get a desert eagle point five o if you want something that doesnt fit my hands?"

i've tried a g19, g26, and g21. though i appreciate the felt-recoil-reduction from the polymer, it just isnt me. i also appreciate that out of the box, one is less likely to have any form of malfunctions.

but the block just isnt sexy in my eyes. i mean, you cant accessorize or pimp out a glock so that it looks, well, sexy!

the only way i'd ever get anything glock is if it was a glock lower with one of those carbine conversion uppers.

seriously, can anything beat this:?

No soul at all, but they go bang every time, and are shockingly accurate.

I don't like 'em, but I think they're great for what they are (reliable, accurate, no-frills pistols that feel like they were designed by someone other than a gunnie...)

I couldn't stand Glocks... just the look alone. I would always steer customers toward the 1911 shelf. I mean, my Great Uncle Al worked at Colt, building .45's in the glory days. I am as much a Colt man as one can be. Then, I got a deal on a G17, a second gen... figured for the price, if I hated it as much as I already did, I could sell it for a small profit. Well...

That G17 is with me everywhere... car, hip, under pillow... everytime I pull the trigger, it shoots and the target goes clang. Every time.

I have been assimilated...

Springfield XD plastic is as comfortable to hold as a 1911 for me. You might want to try renting one of those. Other plastic guns I've held are glawkward for me too. :D

All of these are fine handguns but the Sigs are my favorite, followed by the 1911. The 1911 is an engineering marvel (to understate it).

...the 1911. It's a perfectly fine handgun but not my first choice.

I agree completely, and believe... My Glock Model 34 is The Best Pistol Ever Built!

You couldn't give me a 1911, not after the POS guns I've had over the past few years. I'll take my polymer HK's anytime, with complete confidence that they'll work when I need'em to.

It took me a long time to get used to polymer guns but when I did WOW! Now, I've got mostly HK USPs and have only recently started shooting steel guns again...

I grew up on the 1911. I love them. However, i carry a Glock, and it's my only pistol at the moment.

hey at least you gave them a fair shake. some folks like the plastic fantastic and some folks don't. different strokes and all that but at least you tried it before deciding you didn't like it. thats more than some people can say.

Bobby

+1 to Bobby. I've tried a lot of differant guns but the CZ/Tanfoglio ergos work best for me. I can still shoot my Glock pretty well and my 1911 OK, but with my CZ 85 Compact I'm a force to be reconned with. Now I just need to figure out how to get Heinnie Straight Eights on it and it will be perfect :)

The SIG is a bit larger. You might consider the Browning Hi-Power, it is like a narrow double stack 1911. Well, after the trigger job... :p Whole lot of pistols out there, you need to shoot them all. :D

I am currently vacillating over a decision for next semi - main bias being on IDPA useage but carry aspect too. This thread has a lot of useful input and comparisons ... invaluable IMO if you are undecided.

Thus far SIG is calling me but - some of the best shooters at the club use Glocks for IDPA and sure as heck ... get the scores. But then plenty of SIG guys do very well too.

As Chris (CSlinger) said ... ''horses - for courses''. Every time.

The polymer frame doesn't bother me. What does is the short-actuating trigger with no practical manual safety.

The Glock is a really neat design, and I can't contest its reliability. They're also very accurate pistols.

Personally, though, they feel blocky in my hands, and I never liked the grip angle. Plus, you can call that a DA trigger all you want, 4lbs is not double-action in my book, and no way am I carrying it like that.
