playing with .45 schofield in a 45 long colt revolver

Hi,

So, l got 100 schofield brass to play with. I'm using universal and 200 grain lead RNFP bullets.

They will be shot out of a .45 LC old style vaquero.

Do I really need to start with the baby loads based upon CAS standards? Can't I just throw 7 grains of universal in them as a starting load based upon the robustness of the revolver and the predicted 13,000 cup estimated at this load?

Several books show load data for the 45 Schofield. Just follow it.

On the Hodgdon web site, they show Universal at 6.0gr for 773fps to 7.0 for 938fps.

For a few years I shot 4.5 grains of Bullseye with a 200 gr. RNFP loaded backwards crimped in the grease grove.

Currently I'm using Schofield cases 200 gr. RNFP with 4.5 trail boss--still plenty of recoil.

I have found with cast bullets you can almost always find a lower than max. load with most pistol and shotgun powders. DON'T DOWN LOAD SLOW BURNING TAPE PISTOL POWDERS!! Examples H110 and WW296.

I use to load 5.0 grs. of W231 with a 200 RNFP. It was fairly mild. I used Schofields so I could get more rounds in my Marlin 1894 Cowboy rifle. It would hold 14 that way. Just remember, you have to clean the chamber just like shooting 38's in a 357 before you can go back to 45 Colts.

Gee! Shoot .45 Schofield ammo in a .45 Colt revolver? Who would do a thing like that? Well, maybe the army; they did it from 1874 to the mid-1890's and even after.

Yeah I just wanted try it - I loaded up 100 last night with the recipe I mentioned above. I'll try it this weekend at my awesome Mom/dad-in-laws house with the Ruger.

I do have a sweet new hogleg coming Tuesday - I can't wait. It's G-4 on Nutmeg's site.
