I just got a s/w modle 10-5 special CTG k frame 3 screw config w/ a pin behind the barrel. The modle c10-5 is stamped inside the yoke, the serial number starts c9. Wondering about the age and if flat bottoms would be appropriate as I prefer them

Welcome to THR.

I'll move this to the revolver forum where folks focus on wheel guns.

Nothing wrong with that, had one, good solid revolvers, I think from the late 60s/early 70s. Flat bottoms? You mean square butt grips, like these? These are Pachmeyer Presentations on my Smith 10-8, cheap, easy to install, durable, just not very attractive to the eye. :)

If you're worried, have a gunsmith in your area do a quick safety inspection, and make sure it's OK, but when he says yes, enjoy!

The S&W M10-5 was manufactured in 1962 only. There were also 7 or 8 special runs and variations of the M10-5 made. Between 1957 and 1962 there were a lot of Engineering changes made.
1957 the M&P becomes the Model 10
M10-1 - 1959
M10-2 - 1961
M10-3 - 1961
M10-4 - 1962
M10-5 - 1962
M10-6 - 1962

M10-7 - 1977
M10-8 - 1977

As you see the Model 10 went through 3 Engineering changes in the year 1962 alone. On the M10-5 S&W changed the front sight width from 1/10" to 1/8" on tapered barrel revolvers. Since you have a M10-5 you also don't have a screw in the trigger guard since it was eliminated in the M10-4 earlier in the year.

Are you sure the serial number starts with a C9? That serial number wasn't used until 1967 which would conflict with the model number you gave us. The Serial Number should be on the bottom of the grip frame stamped on the flat at the bottom of the revolver. Your serial number should be between K468099 and K515478, probably right in the middle somewhere.
