I check my manuals and powder mfg. web. sites.....

but I also like to vet "new to me" loads here for comment, advise and critique.

loading for 16" AR

69 gr. Sierra BTHP Matchking
WSRP
Win brass (twice fired)
23.0 gr. H335 (purchased in the last 3 mos)
(loaded a box for testing, load recommended to me by fellow member at the gun club where I shoot)

I also loaded up 5 rounds with 23.4 gr. of the same H335, which is pushing close to Sierra's published max. of 23.8 gr.

I've read that the newer lots of H335 are faster burning, so I wanted to see if others thought 23 was a prudent starting point, and whether the 23.4 might be dangersous.

thanks in advance....

Bump....

I was kind of under the impression that this was an "old faithful" load....

maybe because I respect the guy who recommended it....

the absence of comments is making me think twice.

Did a search and only found it recommended one other place.

Any other thoughts? comments?

Looks good to me. Start at 23.0 and work up. You will find a sweet spot along the way. If your rifle won't shoot something between 23 & 24 Grs well, it's not the load. :)

Although different rifle and projectile here are some of my results using this powder.

For Hornady 52gr Match bullets I got my best group so far with

24.5gr H335 and BR-4 primers. I am shooting a remington 700 with a comparator OAL .020 off the lands at 1.870". My average velocity was 3172. 24.5 was were my groups grouped the smallest. My next charge of 25gr they opened back up and continued opening up until I hit the published max load.

SSN Vet,

Data a bit old ..

From Lyman 48th Edition:
1st Printing : DEC2002
2nd Printing : MAY2004

.223 Remington Brass
TTL 1.750"
2.260" OAL
Remington 7 1/2 primer
Sierra HPBT #1380 69 gr.

Universal Receiver 24" 1-12 twist
Colt AR-15 20" 1-7 twist

H335 Starting 22.9 gr. 2593 fps 32.7k CUP
H335 Max 25.5 gr. 2994 fps 51.4k CUP

.

Hodgdon gives 22.0 as the 69 grain bullet starting load for H335. Going up to 24.0. Always work up the load from the 'Starting' load.
"...an "old faithful" load..." Maybe in his rifle, but all rifles will shoot all ammo and loads differently. Even two consecutively serial numbered identical rifles. You have to work up the load for your rifle.

not to shabby.....
