Plum Crazy lowers - illegal?

If someone did happen to own a New Frontier lower and wanted to make absolute sure they were in the clear, couldn't you just pay to have the lower receiver laser etched with the serial number?

Cutting numbers into plastic doesn't seem to have ever impressed the BATFE as meeting the spirit of the law, and hence the regulations they wrote (and enforce).

Besides, generally the only serial number that matters is the one that the manufacturer put there. You can write anything on it you want, but the BATFE isn't going to look at that as better.

ngnrd Well, since I posted the link, I have to say the article has been updated with a response from David Famiglietti from New Frontier Arms. His response seems valid, and I haven't actually been able to find anything from the ATF on the matter. So... this may have all been a false conclusion based on assumptions, speculation, and old information.

Still... If anybody hears anything else about it, feel free to post a link.
Famiglietti's response seems to have pulled the rug out from under Steve Johnsons "journalism".

It's a shame when "our" media sources are as ill informed and sensational as the supposed anti gun media.

Shame on The Firearms Blog and Steve Johnson.

Agreed, much ado about nothing.

Being a blogger or a journalist doesn't mean either are capable of doing the job right. It does seem we got pulled into a non-event. While the owner of New Frontier doesn't have as much finesse as he thinks compared to his erstwhile competitor, he does get the point across, especially in light of the date on the letter. It's obvious that if the BATF wanted to do something about it, not only would they have, it would already be resolved. As said in the letter, it's hard to put the spilled milk back in the jug, they propose changes, the makers incorporate them, and they all move on.

Sounds like good advice.
