Police hassling Seniors...

Why does almost everyone assume that the media “got it right” with every story that paints LEOs in a bad light? We all know that they spin reports about guns and gun owners in order to sneak across an anti-gun message 90% of the time. They have proven themselves to be unreliable and inaccurate with regard to reporting the facts.

I withhold judgment and my opinion based on this article. It could be that she in the sweet old lady each of us would like to have as a grandmother, and it could be that she is a mean, vindictive old lady that takes joy in exploiting her situation to get a rise out of other people. I have met both types. If the former is true, it is a shame, if the latter is true, the officer did everyone a favor.

Because, Matthew, there is that percentage of active folks on the Internet who, when they sit down, severely cramp their brains. This same group assumes that if you merely try to explain some foolishness without an apparently obligatory condemnation, you support the foolishness. Go figure.

I'm often dubious that homo sapiens is truly sapient. (Refer back to my opening conclusion.)

Cynicism mode off.

One of the older officers hit on a solution. He patrolled in the nicer neighborhood and wrote a couple tickets to the kids of the, how should I put it, higher social strata. The next day, the no discretion rule about bicycle lights was lifted....Funny how that works sometimes.....

ROTFLMAO Now that is what I call great community policing!

It may well be that this lady walked on "don't"; but many elderly people do not have the coordinated reflexes, eyesight and agililty that most younger enjoy.

This lady may have; looked at the crossing signal and seen what looked like "walk" with sunglare, reflections etc.

Or it may have been "walk" - but in her slow motion world of making absolutely sure no vehicle driver was going to run her down regardless of the signal, checking all directions - perhaps it changed on her before she stepped out far enough.

There are a great many elderly folk who have problems with these kind of things. Ultimately, creating an environment where the oldest, slowest and weakest should be encouraged to "just stay home" is not where we want to go.

Just based on the responses from the LEO's. based on the fact they go after me instead of addressing the primary thread, all I can assume is they were all for it.

Lucky that little old lady wasnt tased or maced. She definately had it coming to her. Passive agressive little b#$%$ using a cane to slow down traffic

But then again, little old ladies are so much easier to go after than murderers, thieves and rapists.

Whatever it takes for a LEO to get home safely at the end of his shift,,,

My great aunt Mary used to be frustrated by the 'Walk/Don't Walk" signs. She said they never gave her enough time to get across Ventura Blvd. It turns out she would start across with the "Walk" signal, then be confronted with the flashing "Don't Walk" signal. She thought that meant she had to turn around and go back to where she started from. Or, she would make it to the median where she would wait a long time for another pedestrian to push the button to bring up the "Walk" signal.
The silence of most of the LEO's on the board is pretty deafening. By their unwillingness to condem the ticketing officer it can only be surmised that they believe the old lady deserved it.
It's pretty difficult to say at first glance whether the woman deserved the ticket or not. I have lived in locales where the sizable seasoned citizen community pretty much did as they pleased with regards to traffic laws. If they got a traffic ticket, they whipped out the 'AARP' card (similar to the race card) in court and the judges gave them a break. A number of the peace officers just gave up and did not waste their time enforcing the traffic laws in the seasoned citizen community. The increased number of traffic accidents showed that apathy on the part of the officers.

Walking License

If she entered the crosswalk on a "stale" WALK then, since she knows how slow she is, deserved the ticket.

Pedestrians have no right to hold up traffic. I am tired of having to wait for some slow as glass ped who could not care less about the drivers they are delaying.

I agree with Warren. When seniors are too infirm to drive they should be required to get a "Walking License". One of the requirements for the license would be a timed walk across a street. If they can't cross the street at a speed deemed fast enough not to infuriate impatient drivers, then they would be denied the license.

If a senior wanted to go for a walk, they could only walk around their block, but not cross the street.

walking can be downright dangerous

The time has come for background checks for drivers.
violent misdemeanors and all felons should not be permitted to have a DL.
The time has come for background checks for all people
owning those two ton weapons we call cars.

Moderator Note

I closed the other thread because of cop-bashing. Cop bashing is defined as slamming all cops based on the actions of one.

This one, I won't close. I'll just quietly remove anyone who can't figure it out, and let the rest of the posters continue their conversation.

You want to bash this particular cop, based on the news article? Have at it.

You want to bash all cops? Not on THR.

Observations

-Jeff White posted an excellent reply to explain the workings of how/ why some things occur in regard to LEO and Citizens.

-Others have used common sense and civility to express viewpoints.

-More view and replies on this thread and subject matter than threads dealing with RKBA, how to promote Responsible Firearm Ownership, assisting fellow members fighting for CCW and other RKBA needs in respective areas.

Some folks want to fuss and gripe, others roll up sleeves and get things done.

Public Forum - which impression did you leave with someone visiting THR?

Bashing cops = not okay, bashing old people = okay. Alright, I got it.

i am an LEO and i did interject that i did not agree with this ticket :)

What Pax and sm said.

Regarding people walking anywhere: Who cares if they're taking their time. There is nothing about a pedestrian under most circumstances that should cause anyone in a motor vehicle to become upset or aggressive. No one needs to be anywhere that one can't wait an extra 10 or 15 SECONDS! :what:
If you find that you are entertaining aggressive behaviour, perhaps you ought to get a cup of tea and think about it for awhile because there are some synapses that aren't firing properly in your head. If you are carrying a firearm, maybe a little more self evaluation need also occur. Sheesh.
