Man dies, officer injured after high-speed chase
By KRISTEN KRIDEL Alligator Writer

Law enforcement officers opened fire on a man who drove into a Gainesville police officer Tuesday morning after he led them on a high-speed chase through two counties.

Officials say William Christmas died after the shooting, but they would not say if it was because of gunshot wounds or from driving his car into an animal hospital wall.

According to a news release:

An Alachua County deputy informed ASO, Florida Highway Patrol and Gainesville Police officers that a driver was leaving Alachua County and entering Union County around 8:30 a.m. Christmas then drove his red Nissan back into Alachua County at speeds exceeding 120 mph.

After Christmas stopped at the 1300 block of Northwest 39th Avenue, law enforcement tried to get him out of his vehicle. Instead, Christmas accelerated and hit GPD Officer John O’Ferell. Law enforcement officers then started shooting at Christmas.

Christmas’ car hit the wall of Shores Animal Hospital at 3811 NW 13th St. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Because both GPD officers and ASO deputies were involved, State Attorney Bill Cervone’s office is handling the criminal investigation, said Spencer Mann, the State Attorney’s spokesman.

Mann did not say if both law enforcement agencies were involved in the shooting or not.

O’Ferell was taken to a local hospital to be treated for a knee injury, GPD spokesman Keith Kameg said.

O’Ferell and the ASO deputies involved in the incident - Joel Coppock and Greg Lyons - have been taken off active duty.

Both GPD and ASO are conducting internal investigations, Mann said.

Officials did not release any information about Christmas or why he was traveling at high speeds through Alachua County.

"Officers blocked in Christmas' car near NW 13th Street and 39th Avenue. But, as O'Ferrell and Alachua County Sheriff's Deputy Joel Coppock tried to get him to come out of the vehicle, witnesses said he drove forward, striking the police officer.

O'Ferrell twisted his knee and had a deep contusion to his thigh where the car hit him.

His attorney, Denise Ferrero, said the officer collapsed soon after firing the shots."

Ouch

Looking at the video, the officer chose extremely poor tactics to stand directly in the path of a vehicle with an obviously un-co-operative driver at the wheel... he's very lucky he wasn't more seriously hurt. In his position, I'd have moved more to the side, out of the line of impact, and also shot at the tires as soon as the vehicle began to move.

As a University of Florida graduate I can't help but laugh at this (not at the downed officer, but at the byline). "The Alligator" is the school newspaper. It is independent, but has the credibility of "The National Enquirer"....another Florida institution.

those have to be the dumbest cops ever...

Bust the window and drag him out kicking and screaming. Obviously the big cop didn't know what a window punch was, all squad cars have them. And where the hell was their backup?

Not true.

And where the hell was their backup?
A good example of Real Life vs TV. Backup in the movies is 10 seconds away. In real life it takes time to cover the many miles that your backup may have to cover to get to you. Depending upon the area and other factors backup can run up to 45 minutes... :uhoh:

IMO the cop had plenty of warning to get out of the way and as mentioned probably shouldn't have been standing in the path in the first place.

(Thursday evening quarterbacking here :) )

First after a couple of seconds the PO in the white shirt should have moved off to the drivers side & stuck his pistol in the other driver's ear (or as close as the glass permitted). Using yourself as a stop stick is never a good idea. 2nd, backup was there in the form of the dark shirted guy who didn't do much other than bang on the window. 3rd, WTH were the other drivers next to them doing hanging around at the light :what: . Frankly if there is a stop going down right next to me with guns drawn I'm going to make a quick right turn on red and exit the area quickly  .The people crossing the intersection from the perpendicular direction I can understand because they didn't see what was going on until they were right there. Finally, this cracked me up:
Officials say William Christmas died after the shooting, but they would not say if it was because of gunshot wounds or from driving his car into an animal hospital wall.
:scrutiny:

Sure, he died from a 5mph impact (assumption here as the car drifted out of the frame as the shots were being fired. Assuming that there was a curb somewhere off to the left where he was drifting, his run at the nearest building was maybe 20 yards, hardly enough time/distance to build up enough speed to kill himself from impact) . Yes, it looked like a good shoot (with lots of tactical problems) but this statement was silly.

okay, badone, all the squad cars around here have them because they cost $0.69 at pep boys and are quite useful. If he didn't, there are lots of things he could use to break the window.

And since when is backup in the movies 10 seconds away? Backup only ever arrives after the last bad guy is dead.

This was not in the sticks, state police would not have to find their way there and take 45 minutes to do so. Also, how long were they chasing him? The second the chase started additional units would be called.

Why in the world would you sit in your car, beside two drawn firearms. :what:
Should the shooting start the people -ah- sheeple in the cars to the right of the police cars are just sitting there, waiting for the light to turn green.
I'd get the heck out of dodge, taking my chances with crossing the intersection under a red light.
Or at the least, get out of my car, away from any cross fire.
But hey, that's just me. Condition yellow

RTFM

Ukraine Train,

No tizzy here....nope, lol.

In all honesty I couldn't figure out if the post was a point in general, up for comments, a gripe,...........didn't know is all.

I guess if I'm confused in the future I won't ask for clarification, lol.

Sorry, I misinterpreted your original reply as, "There was no point in posting that."

I want to know what the bigger cop was trying to break the window with?
He must have hit the window twenty times or more. A 3D cell maglite would certainly take out a window easy enough. Maybe he was using a $180 tactical flashlight that will blind you but do little else.
