WASHINGTON - Presumptive Democratic nominee John Kerry on Friday collected the endorsement of the International Brotherhood of Police Officers, a police union that backed President Bush in the 2000 election.

"After three and a half years of disappointing leadership under George Bush, we need to change course in November and elect a president with a real record of supporting police officers and a lifetime of standing with law enforcement," IBPO President David Holway said in a statement provided by the Kerry campaign.

The union endorsed Bill Clinton (news - web sites) in 1992 and 1996. Kerry scheduled a round-table discussion with members of the group on Friday to talk about law enforcement issues.

In a statement provided by the Bush campaign, a former New York City police commissioner said Bush has provided unprecedented support for first responders, including $13 billion to state and local governments to prepare for terrorism.

"The president has given law enforcement the tools to do their job in the Patriot Act, while John Kerry attacks the law on the campaign trail," former commissioner Bernard Kerik said.

Earlier Friday, Kerry laid two wreaths at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, which honors 16,666 officers killed in the line of duty. One of the wreaths was for the national memorial but the other, in a Massachusetts section, honored a Middlesex County officer killed on this date in 1961. Kerry, a former Middlesex County prosecutor, chatted with officers and family members during the 15-minute visit.

In an unexpected visit Thursday night to the Capitol, Kerry viewed photographs depicting abuse of Iraqi prisoners in U.S. custody. He made a last-minute decision to travel to the Senate and then spent 45 minutes viewing the photographs in a secure location, spokesman David Wade said.

Lawmakers who saw the photographs earlier in the day reacted with revulsion. Wade said Kerry had no comment.

Kerry said in a television interview Thursday he welcomed Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld's trip to Baghdad but had not changed his view that Rumsfeld should resign.

"I'm glad the secretary of defense went there. The troop morale needs, I think, that kind of visit," Kerry said on Fox News Channel's "Hannity & Colmes." "I don't think it changes the dynamics of what America still needs to do to get to the bottom of this."

The Massachusetts senator has warned that the reports of abuse in the Iraqi prison threaten to undermine the effort to combat terrorism in the Middle East by infuriating Arabs suspicious about U.S. intentions in the region.

Republicans have accused Kerry of politicizing the war on terrorism. Viewing the photos was an effort to gather all the facts before weighing in on the issue any further, Wade said.

Kerry planned to fly to his home in Boston for a day off on Saturday. He resumes his campaign on Sunday with a trip to Las Vegas before visiting Kansas to mark the anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision ending segregated schools.

More Cops Endorse Kerry: Reflects John Kerry's Strong Anti-Crime Record, Bush's Failures to Support Law Enforcement, Says Campaign
…
The International Brotherhood of Police Officers (IBPO) is the only major national police organization to have endorsed the winner of the last three presidential elections. Today, IBPO endorses John Kerry because of his strong anti-crime record and because of President Bush's consistent failure to support law enforcement in the battle against crime and the war against terror. Joining the International Union of Police Associations (IUPA) in support of John Kerry, IBPO sends another message that John Kerry stands for a strong and safe America.

IBPO ENDORSED GEORGE W. BUSH IN 2000, BILL CLINTON IN 1996 AND 1992:

I understand that there are at least a few LEOs who post here.

How did the reporter get from the IBPO endorsing Kerry to the Secretary of Defense visiting Iraq and the prisoner abuse in the same article? He might as well have included the Martha Stewart case, AWB renewal and a review of the soon to be released Harry Potter movie.

The IBPO is not a Police Union. It is a union made up of police adminitrators and politicians that get lots of money from anti-gun groups across America as "consultants".

The IBPO is a documented anti second amendment organization.

Check the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence's brief in the Emerson decision.

Way to address your audience, w4rma.

What Thumper said.

That organization is hard core anti 2nd amendment and has been all along. To hold up ANYTHING they have to say as meaningful or relative is to put yourself in the harsh light of truth. Obviously, you agree with them and hold them up as something to be proud of.

Kinda says more about the person who agrees with them than much of anything else.

Since the stated purpose of this firearm forum is to promote the RKBA, according to moderators, I have a question:

Why is it that, a friend of RKBA who happened to have some strong feelings about the religion of Islam, was banned.

And a troll who doesn't own a gun, doesn't care about guns, and never talks about guns, is allowed to remain?

Don't get me wrong: I thought the comments by mvpel were wrong, and I am NOT calling into question the decision to ban him. I'm calling into question the decision to allow the troll to remain. He doesn't care about RKBA, at all. Simply sticks around to waste bandwidth.

Rant off

We are talking about supporting the candidate with the 100% anti-RKBA voting record here.

:barf:

Of course, w4rma has done little but spam the forum with massive cut-and-paste quotes for months. But now he's spaming the forum with massive cut-and-paste quotes about how great the 100% anti-RKBA candidate is.

:scrutiny:

Somehow I suspect that if I, say, went to a forum about Kosher cooking and started posting receipes for pork ribs, I would be considered a troll.

Bush give the police the Patriot Act and is pushing hard for the even more abominable Patriot Act II. I would like to know in what way has George Bush not supported the police. Aside from removing all constitutional rights and allowing random strip-searches of your children in your home, I'm not sure what they're missing. Not that Bush isn't trying to rape the constitution and the people of the country, but so far, he hasn't gotten around to it. Perhaps he's busy planning an invasion of Bali just to prove that there is a war that he can handle SOMEWHERE in the world.

</jaded>

Kerry has made it clear that he wants to give a lot of money to police and fire departments, so this endorsement is to be expected, seems to me. That's about the extent of differentiation in his anti-terrorism plan, because he knows Bush is doing the right thing and he voted in support of it. I certainly wouldn't make a deep thread out of it, unless there are other motives or tangents.

Excellent post and a very good question this is not likely to be answered in the immediate future.

Because this is totally about the right to keep and bear arms. There is no reason for any religeon to be discussed unless they turn into bannners. If that is the case they are fair game. Quit getting your shorts in a wad over someone elses transgressions.

Cut w4rma some slack. He abides by the rules and everyone needs a little comic relief. Place would be boring without opposing opinions popping up. :)

Union leaders back Democrat!

Stop the presses!

Union leaders, generally paid in 6 figures but probably paying taxes at an 11% tax rate like Terezzzza Heinz Kerry, have decided to endorse the Democrat candidate. Even though Kerry hasn't announced any positions vis-a-vis police, firemen, or domestic security other than:

"I'm for it, if the majority of you are that is, otherwise I'm against it, ... probably ... but I'll take the matter under consideration and form a blue ribbon panel ... chatter, chatter chatter ..."

This ain't exactly a man bites dog news headline now, is it?

The traditional formula is;

Union Leadership = Democrat

Union rank and file = vote their conscience and better judgement.

Hey W4rma, any other anti RKBA groups you'd like to promote here? How about Sarah Brady and Tom Diaz endorsing Kerry from their Washignton love nest?

Notice that not a single post of this troll has been made outside of the LP forum and that every single one of them have been of a nature designed to irritate the conservative base of the majority of the members of this board.

Irritating conservatives isn't the issue; this isn't a Republican forum. Actively supporting the 100% anti-right to keep and bear arms candidate on a forum dedicated to the "advancement of responsible firearms ownership," however, most certainly is.

:barf:

He abides by the rules

Reconciling support of the 100% anti-RKBA candidate with "advancement of responsible firearms ownership" is a pretty good trick. Any explanations for that one?
