After the Salinas Rodeo in a couple weeks I'll be sighting in for our Aug Deer hunt. Local Blacktails are under 150 pounds. Ranges 50-300 yards. Last year I worked up a load for my .224 Weatheby Varmintmaster which worked great at almost 200 yards.Since mid 90s I usually use a .308 Savage 99 with a 4x scope.I used a 600 Rem.Brown Prescision .308 Ultra light when Ihiked big Sur in the 80's but used to use an old .270 Win pre 64 Featherweight with a 4x scope before that.I don't feel like using any .303 Savages or 32-40s or the like this year . We drive a jeep on a huge ranch and dismount and stalk when we spot some bucks.

my choice

Here in the uk we hunt deer from muntjac to red. Muntjac are as big as a labrador dog. a red deer is the same as your elk. we have certain legal restrictions as well. ie the bullet must be going over 2400fps at muzzle and be .24 and over.

for anything bigger than muntjac i use a Parker-hale lightwieght safari in .30-06 mounting a bushnell trophy 3-9 x 50 scope. i use 150 grain speer spitzers at about 2850fps. I don't change loads.

I am just in the process of getting a .243 win, i am not sure what rifle, maybe a cz or something else cheap. I will be using a busnell scope on it and will be loading a 90 grain speer spitzer. i have not yet worked out the load.

well the old 1956 Model 70 .270 Winchester was dusted off and resighted in with a fresh batch of Remington 130 grain Bronze Points I loaded over 60 grains of H-4831. I want to use up these components (I have 6 50 round boxes of Bronze points)before I die! I loaded 150 rounds and shot up 60 a few weeks ago sighting in the remounted (new/old Buehler 2 piece mounts)4x Unertl multi dot scope scope. I got 3/4" groups at 100 yards- 5 shot groups. I sighted in 1.5" high at 100 yards. I can hold on to 300 yards and I won't shoot much further than that , even Lazered and short Harris Bipodded! The Bronze points are fairly explosive but usually make it thru any thing under 300 pounds.I'm getting older, boys, and this will be a 'classic' hunt on a large ranch east of Salinas where the shots are 200-300 yards usually on the 150 pound Blacktail. I also drew a Northern Caligfornia mule deer hunt for next month..:)
