I looked around online and couldn't find anything on my question. I know the legal minimum is 18" on shotguns, would an original polychoke (not the screw in kind) that is permanently attached to the barrel count towards the overall barrel length?

The permanently attached part would count toward the overall barrel length, provided it is attached in a BATF approved manner.

Right!

Soft soldered on, and / or screwed on, or both, would not get-R-done in the eyes of the ATF.

If you can take it back off without resorting to an acetylene torch or hack-saw?
It doesn't count.

Blind pinning it, or hi-temp permanent welding would count.

It was just a conversation between some friends and I. I have a single shot 20 gauge I want to shorten the barrel to 20 inches and thread for tubes and one of them suggested the polychoke permanently affixed to it. His logic is that way I won't have to mess with choke tubes.

So, how often do you plan to mess with choke tubes anyway?

I've hunted everything that walks or crawls in Kansas & Colorado for 50+ years with an IC or MOD Browning A5, or Skeet1 & Skeet2 Ithaca 20 double.

If you just have to have a Poly-Choke?
Have it threaded for tubes anyway.

And then buy a screw-in Poly-Choke II.

Then, when you get tired of all your friends making fun of how it looks?

Screw it off and put the IC or Mod choke tube back in it, and Bee Happy they don't tease you anymore!

And kill more game then they ever thought about hitting.

I'm still debating what to do really. I like the simplicity of fixed choke barrels where I can swap to the one that's needed, on the other hand, tubes means less barrels cluttering my cabinet. I'll figure it out

the original poly-choke is not part of the barrel. i doubt it would count toward the legal length of the shotgun.

if you have it permanently affixed, it no longer will be able to choke the barrel. so, maybe you should get the tubes.

I was not aware of this. Thank you for explaining that

Thats wrong.

A permanently affixed Poly-Choke would still be a hand adjustable choke you can set to any setting you want just by turning the end to the setting you want.

I still contend you will miss out on more game shots while fiddle-diddling with the settings while hunting then if you just start out with the right choke tube you need for the hunting conditions of the terrain, game, and weather conditions that day.

And then Fogadaboutit!

On the other hand, you can buy a plastic choke tube box for $1.98 that holds them all, drop it in your game vest, and Foogadaboutit too.

Unless you find out 5 miles from the truck you need a different choke tube then you thought 5 miles ago.
Then you have the tubes & wrench in your game vest.

I might thread it for tubes and keep it at 22 inches.

this is the original poly-choke i was talking about.

i think the legal barrel length will be measured from the bottom end of the slot. the base looks to add a bit to barrel length, but not much.

Yes & No.

By Federal law:

If the flash hider, or other muzzle attachment is threaded on and easily detachable, it is measured from the muzzle face.

If the flash hider, or other muzzle attachment is permanently attached by a weld or blind pin, it is measured from the front of the flash hider.

Slots don't matter.
Only overall length.
