Just thought I'd share this with you folks.
Popular Handgun Ammo Comparison Chart (It's a PDF file -- you'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open it.)

Any comments welcome -- especially constructive stuff, such as; suggested additions, suggested deletions, corrections, etc.

Please remember this is meant for POPULAR handguns -- guns that are readily available and you would seriously consider buying new.

Oops. Is the 45LC used in popular guns that can be readily bought new? If so, can you give me some examples?

OK.
1. Beretta Stampede
2. Colt SAA
3. Ruger New Vaquero
4. Ruger Blackhawk
5. Ruger Super Blackhawk
6. Ruger Bisley
7. S&W M25
8. Taurus M45

I guess it depends on what popular means. If popular means a mainstream production company providing a high quality product that is available to U.S. customers, well than yes, these are some examples.

There are also other companies that make pistols in that caliber, however, it is a rifle/revolver cartridge and doesn't lend itself to autoloaders that well. Well, about as good as the 454Casull and the 44Mag would make a good autoloader cartridge. I would consider the 45 LC to be more "popular" than the 454 Casull. But then there is also the newer handcannons including but not limited to the 480 Ruger, 500S&W, et al, that have gained mainstream popularity the past little bit.

If you are going by the chart as to popularity, I'd also hardly consider the 32 H&R to be that popular.

On the flip side, the chart is very informative and an interesting review as to calibers on the market today. It is fun to see the cartridges compared side by side in regards to physical dimensions, MV, ME. Keep up the good work.

Jeff Timm,
Your website has exceeded it's limits.

Hey! Is this the first Highroad Slashdot effect?
Nah. It's just a freebie geocities (Yahoo) site. They don't allow much traffic. If you try again later it should be OK.

You said it better than I could!

Thanks for the info.
I know a little about autoloaders, even less about wheelguns. Any good ideas you can give me I'll try to incorporate.

So, you think -- out with the 32H&R and in with the 45LC? In with the 380 also? Any other gosintas or comesoutas?

Personally I wouldn't take anything out, only add. Yes the 380ACP would be a good one to add, as well as the 45LC. I'll see if I can dig up some other calibers for you.

For other calibers, I'd look at a mainstream company such as Rem. or Win and see what they produce to give you an idea.

I've had no luck trying to find a published list of hangun caliber rankings. My guess would be that the 9mmLuger would be the most popular for sure, though.

OK, I'll add those. Anything else you come up with will be appreciated.

Actually, I got my original cartidge list from S&W's site because they list their guns by caliber as well as model. I figured if S&W still sells them they must be fairly popular. So I basically used their list. I think an ammo mfg. would list everything they make -- "popular" and not.

Are you thinking of adding an additional list of "Rank by Popularity"?
Is 9mm a popular round for revolvers as well as autos?
If so, which 9mm (9 x 17, 9 x 18, 9 x 19, etc.) are common for revolvers? I can add those also.

9x19 have been offered by Ruger and maybe S&W. They are currently offered by Taurus.

PS: The website won't let me view your document. Can you please e-mail me a copy?

I show that your web site has exceeded your limit.

If you send it to me I'll host it on my Domain... I have plenty of room.

Alan Fud,
I have sent you the chart in an e-mail.

Sinsaba,
Thanks -- and I have e-mailed you regarding your generous offer rather than take up bandwidth here.

.45 LC Guns

I know this one is about handguns but...Don't forget the lever carbines in that chambering. My little Winchester Trapper clocks 1250 fps with a 255-grain cast bullet, and kisses 1200 with a 300-frain SWC with safe loads. Wicked fast on multiple targets out to 50 yards, and hits the steel plates HARD at 50. 100-125 yards with the same sight setting...iron sights...and a gallon-sized milk jug is in for a world of hurt.

I own a few .45 Colt carbines too, they anchor Tennessee pigs with one shot authority too.

lebshiff21,

Thanks for putting the chart on your webspace. Yahoo shut me off for some reason. Maybe I was using to much bandwidth.
