So I'm trying to simplify my reloading life a bit. I'm looking for a powder that I could use for all-around target loads with plated bullets in 9mm, 38/357, and (optional) 44 mag. I'm not looking for max loads, just general plinking.

W231 is pretty versatile, even in larger cases.I used it a few times...when I could ge it..for wimpy cowboy action loads ini 45 colt and it shot fine.

I agree, W231 is a fine powder for what you are looking to do. I use W231 for loading 9mm, .38 Special, .45 Auto and .45 Colt ammo. I don't usually use it for middle pressure .357 Magnum or heavier .45 Colt ammo, that goes to HS-6 instead. (but you can use it for the .357 Magnum if you really want to)

Jeffm223,
BTW, if you can't find any W231 and you see some HP-38 buy that instead. They happens to be the same exact powder. (verified by Hodgdon)

It is kinda dirty and IMO doesn't meter the best in the world, but Unique is real versatal. I perfer W231/HP-38.

Vihtavuori N320/N330 is also versatile and comparable to 231.
It's drawback is it's expensive.
It's plus is that it really shoots clean, even with light loads and it too meters well.
