Took my Springfield to the range today again. I've burned about 1000 rounds of ammunition through it, maybe a little more, and when I got home I compared my results with a target from last month (20 days +/-). I'm an on-call employee and I haven't had any calls lately, so with my salary, I get paid to go shoot! At least that's the way I like to look at it. Being on call blows but at the moment I can't complain to much because work is slow.

Just for the record, to clear some questions before they come up. I was using:
Stock Springfield XD that has broken itself in very nicely, clean action, trigger pull has loosened up from factory after 1000 rounds. Nothing special done to the gun. 4" service model, S/R 6".
Winchester 230 gr. .45ACP (My favorite practice load)
2-5 seconds between shots, working on my technique more than anything, speed is comming slowly.
Range 10yrds, my standard practice distance, though I throw at least a mag at 25 and one at 50 every time I go, trying to get myself to focus on little targets far away and maintain my FS focus.

Here's the breakdown, on 28-Nov I shot 60 rounds at 10yrds, slow fire(roughly the same as today), at the time I think I had 400 rounds through the gun.
87% went into an 8" ring.
66% went in a 4" ring.

600 rounds later, today 19-Dec, I shot 30 for my scorekeeping (last dirty bird target, guess I need to get more).
100% in the 8" ring (very happy with myself, I hit the target every time!)
25 shots in the 4" ring, 83%
21 shots in a 3" ring, 70% (from now on I'll be scoring 3" rings instead of 4)

I don't pretend to be a target shooter. The .45 is for SD/CCW, but for those who don't practice as much with their handguns, I wanted to post this. Handguns are tough for me, and obviously the gun is more accurate than I. But I know that I've put a little time in when I see people printing groups 3 times that size at the range and don't intend to practice at all. My first groups when I bought the gun had bullets flying out of a 12" ring at 10yrds, so for me, this is an accomplishment. These were still targets but with my line of work I never know my schedule so it's hard to plan a SD course and this is all I've got. Well, that and a lot of reading on techniques/training tips.

My old man has a .380 and I keep telling him to go out and shoot it once in a while. Maybe when I see him in January I can show him a couple things and convince him to practice a little (he's put about 3 magazines worth of bullets through the gun) when I buy him some ammo and targets. Or (hopefully), he's outshoot the crap outta me and shut me up once and for all :D Either way, if I buy him four or five boxes of bullets I think he'll be more inclined to practice.

Just wanted to post this to find out what kind of groups others have at this range, (I know a lot of people are probably far more skilled than I) and give myself something to shoot for, no pun intended. I know I'm long winded, so please excuse me for that. Any thoughts/tips. I do penny drills all the time when I'm home. I don't want to change anything on the gun, except maybe put some night sights on it. I like the long, heavy trigger because for me that's a safety feature, one of the few on this gun and one that I count on. Even though I keep my fingers out of the trigger guard, hair triggers make me nervous.
