Toying around with old parts I had lying about, I found that a Swedish Mauser sight hood fits snugly and handsomely on this old ex-police rifle I picked up from Kentucky. The stock was painted red, and was missing an extractor and ejector (which I installed.) I don't quite like peep sights it has with this configuration. Does anyone know of an aftermarket V-Notch sight? Would it be unwise to file down the basic sight to make one? I guess I'm used to the milsurp style that is common to Mausers/Carcano/etc.

your sight picture will be off if you file down the sights in their current position. having them closer to your eye is good for a peep, but if you V notch it the front post will be tiny in the notch. You really want a open style sight right in front of the receiver on those id think. You could maybe mount something to the handguard, but those guns were never ment to have standard open sights on them.

I'm with LoonWulf on this. A notch rear sight in the same position as a receiver mounted peep sight is going to be blurry and hard to use. The notch sight will be too close to the eye, which is not the case with the factory peep sight.

However, if it were me and I wanted to see for myself, I'd get a spare rear sight peep blade from Ruger (or wherever) and cut it in half leaving the bottom part of the circle intact. Then try that out as a homemade rear notch sight.

I've changed over a rifle from a peep to a notch rear sight before, but the replacement notch sight was installed on the barrel.
