I've come into posession of a Savage .32 caliber pistol. It is brown in color instead of blue or nickel. The serial number is 1188xx and I believe it was manufactured prior to WWII. I've fired the weapon and it seems to be pretty accurate. Would like to find out whatever I can about this pistol and what its value might be. I've attached a photo. Any information anyone can provide would be most appreciated.

Just let me say you've got a very nice weapon! I can' t give you any help as far as worth, however, I'd suggest if you shoot it, get new springs for it. Go onto Wolff Springs .com, check with them about which model and cal. of springs needed, also get spring for mag, will probably be in good shape to go. Good Luck.

Thanks for the link, dogtown tom! Much appreciated! Confirms the pistol was made in 1915, among other things. Thanks again!

It is a Savage Model 1907, in .32 ACP. Over 220,000 were made from 1908 to 1917 in .32 and .380 ACP. The .32 version was used by both France and Portugal in WWI, though yours is not the military version.

Two cautions. Parts are very scarce, so shooting it may not be wise. Also, the grips are held in by a lug fitting into a slot in the frame and removed by lifting at the back and sliding to the rear. BUT, they are made of gutta percha (hard rubber) which turns brittle with age, so I recommend the grips not be removed because of the danger of breakage.

The finish may be brown now but it started out blued.

With so many made, the value is not high; I would estimate that yours would bring, at retail, perhaps $200.
