My friend invited me up to hunt his property in VT this year, but I can only pick one weekend of the season to hunt. Any way to know in advance when the rut will be this year?

Yes, your in luck I went to hunting seminaer where the guest speaker was Charles Alschmere, (spellin of last name is off) he studied and talked about this very subject. Up north it just so happens to be after the second full moon after the fall equinox or Sept 23rd. You can google lunar tables to help you out.

Good luck with your hunt.Hunting the rut is not a bad idea, but you may want to go earlier. It seems the first couple days are your best chance to take a good buck. After that, many wise up quick and lay low until dark. This is assuming you will be on public land.

I myself prefer the pre-rut when the bucks are still alone, aggressive and moving.

The few days right before the rut is the best time to hunt IMO, also the best time to rattle and use grunt and snort calls, the chasing period will have all bucks looking high and low for does, but It's still hard to predict, In Ohio and in Tennessee where I hunt it's usually around Halloween and the 1st week in November, then the Rut kicks in and in areas where you have a high doe to buck ratio it can seem as though all the buck's have dissappeared. But you can never be sure when it hits you just gotta be out there when it does. Good luck!
