excerpt:
"The Gastonia P.D. started the sniper competition in 2007, Duncan said, because the local SWAT team liked to compete.

“It got to the point that it was hard to find an event to compete in,” Duncan said. “We decided to hold our own.”

Duncan said 750 to 1,000 spectators are expected to watch marksmen from across the country compete, including several military teams and a Homeland Security team.

Two sniping legends will also attend the conference – Maj. John L. Plaster, U.S. Army retired, and Lt. Col. Norman A. Chandler II, USMC retired. They will be available to sign books and meet with the public. Chandler will be there Thursday morning until noon Saturday and Plaster will attend Friday morning through noon Saturday.

Plaster is a national authority on sniping and special operations. As a Special Forces staff sergeant, he served three years with the top secret covert operations unit, MACV-SOG, in Vietnam. Plaster is a Green Beret weapons specialist. He led intelligence-gathering missions behind enemy lines in Laos and Cambodia on the Ho Chi Minh trail.

Chandler is the president of the Iron Brigade Armory, which specializes in long-range weapons systems and combat grade M-16 and AR-15 rifles. The five-volume “Death From Afar” series and Carlos Hathcock’s biography, “White Feather,” highlight a listing of rare books obtainable only from the IBA. Chandler’s books are credited by most for helping the public understand military and law enforcement sniping.

Registration for public events will begin Saturday morning. Participants will be asked to sign a release and assumption of risk form.

Events include:

- Glock Plate Challenge ( ages 21 and older). Participants will have a total of eight rounds to knock down six 8-inch metal plates. Two pistols will be given away, one for civilians and one for police/military. The entry fee is $20 for the first run and $10 for each additional run.

- AR-15 Rifle Event. Entry fee is $20 for first run and $10 for each additional run.
