A friend is looking to sell an Arisaka Type 99 and a Carcano long rifle. I'm curious about prices.

The Arisaka:

- Ground mum.

-Nagoya arsenal, Series 4, according to the markings.

-Aircraft sights and action shroud not present, but the slot for the shroud is there.

-chrome-lined barrel. Shiny as heck. Crown is perfect.

-cupped buttplate

-plumb-bob shaped bolt

-numbers match

-knurled bolt

-stock is in beautiful shape...perhaps 'too' beautiful. It may have been refinished. There are no cartouches or marks present. The wood is very light, almost blonde. No visible repairs or signs of bubba refinishing.

-bluing is even and strong. No serious spots of rust or feckling. No serious gouges, scratches or dents.

-everything else looks proper, to my inexperienced eye.

The Carcano:

-wood looks much more like I would expect a milsurp to look like- dark, with some dents and dings, but not at all bad. There are several cartouches that are difficult to see. It is stamped to match the serial number. The port side of the butt has a large oval stamp that I cannot read very well, looks like an acceptance mark. Within the oval is a stamped number that is deeper and more easily readable than the rest: 1896. There is no cut for a sling.

-the metal is good, with slightly worn bluing, with some feckling on the magazine. No serious rust, no large gouges. No evidence of bubba being at work.

- the hexagonal portion of the barrel is marked on each flat, counterclockwise from starboard: PO, 1896, TORINO, 0Q 26XX (serial number, last two XX'ed out) and some sort of stamp, looks like a RE in a circle. between this and the stock...does this mean this thing was churned out in 1896?

-the bore is slightly pitted, with good, strong rifling.

-in front of the rear sight is a notch cut in the wood that goes the whole way down to the barrel...It was obviously done a LONG time ago, but does not look original. The cut is straight up and down on the front, and angled on the back...a relief cut to allow a scope bell? But I see no signs of the receiver being drilled and tapped. Edit: SigfanUSAF figured it out, it's the original relief cut for the battle sight

-the bolt is marked ROCCA

Any idea what these babies are worth?

Thanks,

Mike

The cut in the Carcano handguard is for the sight. Push the button and flip that baby forward gives you the close in notch (100yds?). You'll see it fills the cut perfectly.

Refinished Arisaka w/ ground mum......$225-$250 ish maybe.

Carcano??? Don't really see enough of 'em around. They were averaging around $150 or so, I don't know enough about them to really say.
