I've been wanting a .308 battle rifle for sometime now, and have decided I'm going to get one whether I sell the other guns I wanted to sell first to get the money for it or not. I change my mind almost daily about which kind I want, but right now I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a PTR 91 if I can find one for a fairly reasonable price, and just hold off on the other guns I want till later since this would be the first to be banned most likely.

I started off wanting an M1A or AR style gun, but M1A prices are ridiculous, and I haven't seen many .308 ARs other than the flat top Remingtons lately, and magazines for both of these guns are awful expensive.

Then I decided I wanted a FAL, but I passed up a reasonable deal on one not too long ago thinking I could do better, and haven't seen any other FALs besides some ghetto century builds for under $1800.

So now I'm pretty sure I want a PTR 91. The mags are dirt cheap and everyone has them in stock still, and from most of the reviews I've read about them, they should be more than adequate as far as reliability and accuracy goes. Besides that, they look cool with the green furniture on them.

There's quite a few of them on gunbroker, but my only email address is through Yahoo (you have to have an ISP address or something to register), and I'd like to handle one before I buy one to make sure I like it. I'd just assume buy something in person than have to deal with shipping or transfers and stuff anyway.

There's one locally for sale (and has been for over a month) for $1750, but I'm not going to pay that much for one. That's ridiculous.

I didn't see any at the last gunshow I went to, and I haven't seen any kind of .308 MBRs at any of the gunshops I've been to locally either (other than a Saiga, and I don't want one of those at all). So, I'm hoping some fellow Oregonians know of a gunshop that stocks them, and what the prices are?

Also, what's the best gun shop in Oregon as far as a large inventory goes? I'm pretty sure I've been to all of shops in Coos and Douglas counties, and a good portion of the ones in Eugene/Springfield, and I have yet to be impressed with the selection, prices, or service at any of them. I went to a big gunshop up in Portland 5 or 6 years ago (bought a benchmade knife from them), and they had all sorts of awesome crap I wanted but couldn't afford. I don't remember the name of it, and I don't want to make the trip up there unless there's a high probability of them having what I want.

Thanks

P.S. I would imagine that the Portland area is going to be my best bet, but I'm willing to drive anywhere in Oregon along the I5 corridor or 101, and as far east as Bend/K.Falls/The Dalles.

Saw a DSA STG58 and a PTR-91 at the Rose City Gunshow this morning for around $1000 each. There were others at higher prices, but if you shop around you can find one of either in that price range. Your best bet might be to order a new one through someplace like Atlantic Firearms, and have a local FFL do the transfer.

Congrats! Now we need some pictures of your new rifle! :)

I think you are wise to find one to futz around with before buying. Like automobiles, rifles are not always "one size fits all." There may be something you like better.

After a period of familiarization and learning, I have really come to appreciate mine.
