What would a fair price be on a used stainless Ruger red hawk 44 mag with a 6" barrel.

My brother in law has one he wants to trade in on a semi auto. His is really clean with very little signs of wear and use. In fact I bet he has not put over 200 rounds through it. I think he even has the factory box that came with it.

a 6" Redhawk? It's probably the 5.5" version, the only barrel length's I'm aware of on those guns are 4", 5.5" and 7.5".

I'm not quite up on Redhawk values, but for a FTF sale, I'd say $400-$475 is about the range for a 5.5" Redhawk, depending on the condition. In LNIB condition with the box, it'd be in the high $400s. Trade-in though will likely be about 60% of that, if he is lucky. Figure on $300 or so trade-in; pretty sorry for trading away a perfectly good .44 Mag IMHO.

I agree, keep it and beg, borrow or steal enough to buy what you want. As jad0110 said trade stinks anywhere and smart buyers keep the price around $400 so they can pick up a keeper.

He just does not want the pistol any more and would like to trade it for something he can conceal carry with, little hard to do that with a 5.5" revolver.

Not to mention it is one fat gun. I find the upper limit for me to be S&W N Frames with 4" barrels, and wouldn't consider CCWing my 5.5 Redhawk. Maybe a shoulder holster, but I just don't do those.

Well, if he is insistant on ditching the Redhawk, I'd put it in a case with a $400 to $450 price tag on it and go walk around a big gun show. See what kinda offers he can get from other individuals or dealers. Who knows, he may actually get a good trade on it, but that is a rare thing. Back in '06 I bought a NIB Springfield XD9 4" for $460 plus tax. I sold it to a local pawn shop about 1 year and 1,000 rounds later for $375. Not a bad deal for me, IMO.

An interesting observation I've made with the local dealers is the better deals (not necessarily acceptable) on trades come from the places with the lower retail pricing on guns for sale. The shops around here with the highest / rip off prices offer the crummiest trade in deals.
