I've decided that I want to replace the permanently installed Muzzle Brake on my AR and get a flash hider permanently installed in its place. About how much could I expect to pay a gunsmith for this and are there any issues or problems I could expect out of such a switch?

Thanks!

www.adcofirearms.com gets quite a few recommendations on ar15.com. They have the shop services price list on the website. I hear they turn jobs around pretty quickly also. My guess is you could get it done for less than $100 with them doing all of the work. It depends on what you have and how it's attached.

I had a flash suppressor added to my post-ban colt 20" (no device on barrel). A local company, AZEX in Mesa, AZ, did it.

Price was $120 including the A2 flash suppressor and they did an excellent job not too mention friendly service.

Had I not been able to find someone locally, I would have sent it to ADCO.

Buy it from Bushmaster and they do the gunsmithing for free---so they advertise.

Might be tough to get em to turn down and thread to barrel for you though.

Otherwise ADCO.

You might as well get the front sight base changed to one with a bayonet lug at the same time, should only add the cost of the new FSB to the bill, about $25.

If you have the 'permanent' muzzle brake attached I will second just having the barrel and front sight/gas block replaced with new after ban stuff.
Torch cutting, high speed milling or whatever technique folks are using to do these wonder conversions have negative effects on the accuracy of the barrel.

There are no real issues with having a non-braked barrel turned and threaded for a flash hider but those 'pre-braked' barrel cause more trouble than is neccessary when trying to thread them for after ban stuff.

Just buy a new barrel and be happy.
If cost is a big concern consider a new Olymipic after ban barrel, very good stuff and very reasonably priced.
A gunsmith with skill and ARs, and now-a-days everybody who calls himself a gunsmith pretty well knows the ins and outs of these rifles, the gunsmith should install, headspace, and test fire for a very reasonable fee.
I usually charge way less than $100.00.
Total cost should be well under $300.00.

+1 with Onmilo. I talked with Bushmaster a while back, and they wouldn't remove a permanently attached one and replace it with a different type. Because it could affect the end of the barrel and the accuracy of the rifle.

Funny I saw this today, I'm going to ADCO over lunch. They do great work and the guys there are good folks. I live about 40 min. from their place. I found a machinist that would do 2 barrels for $60. This is just basic lathe work. If you can remove your barrel, a local machinist should be able to help you out easily.

The threads that need to be cut are 1/2 x 28tpi right handed. I belive the print is circulating frequently on ar15.com.

I had the machinist, cut my 20" to 18", turn an A2 profile under the handguards, and machine and cut threads. He also cut the same threads on an FAL barrel for me.

All this for the price mentioned above. If you don't lmind doing the foot work and some disassembly you can save $.

Otherwise pay ADCO to do it. They are fast and offer quality work.
