primer pockets

got a sack of 45acp brass,(1st time fired) started to deprime and see some are lp some sp .both have some with elongated primer pockets...safe to use or??/ thanks

You will want to separate the small pockets from the large to make priming easier. A much lamented fact of life with .45acp.

Gut reaction to an elongated primer pocket is NO don't use it. If you can post a picture it would be helpful.

I am betting it is the top of the primer that is elongated. When you remove the primers inspect the flash hole. If there is a little scratch that will be OK to use but anything deeper than 1/2 the depth of the flash hole is a bad one. A picture would really help. The recent times have given us smaller sized primer pockets but they load the same other than size. At least in my loads they make no noticable difference in accuracy or function. I now save the small ones to use if I should run out of large pistol primers due to supply disruptions.

In something over 100k primer pockets, I've never seen one elongated.

This needs a picture; I think you're misusing a word there.

Those pictures shore look the primer pocket is not round. Wow never seen that before either. Might have been made that way. Did you decap them all or can you inspect some of the others. If they dont leak gasses i would try loading a few and see how they work before scrapping a bunch.

i have not deprimed them all.. will do as you say deprime several load them then see what...only have 150 or so thanks

I see a dark spot which may look like an elongated pocket. I would run them in the tumbler, and inspect them clean.

I think it’s an illusion. I use Winchester 45 acp brass exclusively and have never seen an out of round pocket.

Perhaps clean out the pocket and the base of the case and do another picture. It looks elongated but may just be perspective and crud.

If it really is ovate, I would discard all those who suffer.
