I was sorting my brass and ran across this case. Two cases both with the same headstamp. One has these three tabs around the primer, and the other appears normal. What are the tabs? Is this a crimp of some sort?

Strange to have one with and one without and same stamp...... I guess different batches.
Yep they are crimps to secure primer .. typical of most mil ammo. The brass is ''upset'' by the primer seating die having three small peripheral protrusions.

Thanks for the reply. I thought that's what it was but had never even seen a picture of a crimped primer.
So is it best just to go ahead and toss any that I find like these? Also, what is the "GFL" headstamp? Is this brass any good?

GFL is Fiocchi brass. I have used it in .45acp quite a bit. I haven't had problems with it, but, I think a few years ago there may have been issues with it.
You can remove the crimps either with a swaging tool or a reamer. There are plenty of them on the market.

Ahh of course... Fiocchi ..... knew I recognized the stamp.
You can as DWS says .... remove this crimp .... once you have succeeded in removing spent primer!!! That can be tricky sometimes but if press and pin up to it .. it can work. Lee makes a real simple primer pocket chamfer tool ... I use mine set up in batt hand drill and give all such deprimed cases a small touch, just enough to leave a small chamfer, and then re-priming is a breeze. I am mean with brass and don't mind removing crimps ... if brass good .. you only do it once!

i think i'd try to seat the primers before i did anything to them....you may find that they deat ok without doing anything........i know i've had some military crimped stuff before and was able to seat new primers without swaging them....so i'd try a few first.....D I C K

Seating new primers in un-chamferd crimped cases can raise cain with primer ignition consistancy.
Hence, accuracy can go out the window.
And pressures get inconsistant.

Very nearly added that myself Sam .... apart from which ... it can be a devil of a job sometimes to get fresh primer in a non chamfered pocket!
For me ... ALWAYS run the cutter in those .. every time.
