I have a CVA .54 trade rifle. I am loading 95 grains of 3F and I still have to hold about 5-6 inches high at 50 yards. I have the adjustment on the rear sight maxed out. Any help would be great.

Oh I am shooting a round ball and a pre lubed patch if that makes a difference.

Thanks

Actually for having to hold high and not having a "spot" they are quite good. I had 4 balls touching each other.

I have loaded every thing from 40 grains to 110 and they all seem to hit low.

3f what? Power varies widely among the different powders produced. 3f is for pistols and small caliber riflles. It may be peaking too early in your .54 letting the last few inches of barrel act as a brake. Try 2f or even 1f for longer barrels and larger bores.

If you're holding high at all powder loads, and you have one that produces acceptable groups, then your sights are the problem. And if you've raised the rear sight all you can then you have no choice but to file down the front sight.

holdimg six inches high at 50 yds with a rifle is alot. The rear sight needs to be adjusted up to the max. Assuming the bore is centered (not always the case)the front and rear sights should be the same height above the barrel flat. The easiest fix is probably a lower front sight.

To change sights and be 24 inches high, one sight must be a half inch higher than the front. Is the barrel bent???? Some guns have off center bores and bent barrels, they are difficult but not impossible to shoot.

You aren't aiming with the top of the front blade at the bottom of the rear sight notch are you? (No disrespect intended, but some newbies to shooting do that)

Pack the gun up and send it to me with $1,000. I'll get it shooting right or send a proper shooting gun in return.

I just got it back this morning I had one of the gun shops increase the size of the dove tails so they could take some different sites. They put a ghost ring and a fiber optic site on so I will be off to the range tomorrow afternoon.

Dude, those are very crude unless you are trying to shoot a shotgun or an AR in low light. Your groups should open up, especially beyond 50 yards. Hopefully they didn't booger the dovetails too wide, and you can replace the front sight with a proper, thin, silver blade.
