Professor Wichman E-mail

In a message dated 7/18/2006 6:54:18 P.M.

Claim: A Michigan professor sent an e-mail telling Muslim students to leave the country.

Status: True.

Example: [Collected via e-mail, 2006]

Hooray for Michigan State University
(The Spartans) and Professor Wichman!

Well, what do we have here. Looks like a small case of some people being able to dish it out, but not take it. Let's start at the top. The story begins at Michigan State University with a mechanical engineering professor named Indrek Wichman.

Wichman sent an e-mail to the Muslim Student's Association. The e-mail was in response to the students' protest of the Danish cartoons that portrayed the Prophet Muhammad as a terrorist. The group had complained the cartoons were "hate speech." Enter Professor Wichman. In his e-mail, he said the following:

Dear Moslem Association:

As a professor of Mechanical Engineering here at MSU I intend to protest your protest.

I am offended not by cartoons, but by more mundane things like beheadings of civilians, cowardly attacks on public buildings, suicide murders, murders of Catholic priests (the latest in Turkey!), burnings of Christian churches, the continued persecution of Coptic Christians in Egypt, the imposition of Sharia law on non-Muslims, the rapes of Scandinavian girls and women (called "whores" in your culture), the murder of film directors in Holland, and the rioting and looting in Paris France.

This is what offends me, a soft-spoken person and academic, and many, many, many of my colleagues. I counsel you dissatisfied, aggressive, brutal, and uncivilized ed slave-trading Moslems to be very aware of this as you proceed with your infantile "protests."

If you do not like the values of the West -- see the 1st Amendment -- you are free to leave. I hope for God's sake that most of you choose that option. Please return to your ancestral homelands and build them up yourselves instead of troubling Americans.

Cordially, I. S. Wichman

Professor of Mechanical Engineering

As you can imagine, the Muslim group at the university didn't like this too well. They're demanding that Wichman be reprimanded and mandatory diversity training for faculty and a seminar on hate and discrimination for freshman. Now the Michigan chapter of CAIR has jumped into the fray. CAIR, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, apparently doesn't believe that the good professor had the right to express his opinion.

For its part, the university is standing its ground. They say the e-mail was private, and they don't intend to publicly condemn his remarks. That will probably change. Wichman says he never intended the e-mail to be made public, and wouldn't have used the same strong language if he'd known it was going to get out.

How's the left going to handle this one? If you're in favor of the freedom of speech, as in the case of Ward Churchill, will the same protections be demanded for Indrek Wichman? I doubt it.

This political correctness crap is getting old!

CAIR, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, absolutely doesn't believe that the good professor had the right to express his opinion.

Fixed it for you. CAIR is a front organization for Islamic terrorists. They don't believe anyone has any rights that don't flow from their concept of Islam.

Too bad for them. They protest under our 1st Amendment, we have every right to answer back. I hope the LIEberals do NOT get thier wish to "re-educate" this man.

1. The professor was unrealistic in his expectations of non-propagation of his message. Any message sent out may become public, doubly so for a mass mailing.

2. The students in the US are likely to be the least xenophobic examples of their cultures. Offending them is counterproductive.

3. As an authority figure at the college, he has some leverage over the students. His ability to use his bully pulpit is thus constrained by the conditions of his employment.

I completely agree with what Oleg Volk said.

I also completely agree with the Professor's letter, if it had come from me or some other member of the public there would be no problem. Unfortunately, being a college professor is a postion of respect and power. They have the power to influence the minds of many young people, and with this power comes responsibilites. A professor should not sleep with a student, and they should also not use their position to promote personal views and agendas (although many do).

I had a VERY good history professor back in college who, when asked about political issues, would turn the question back to the class coloring it as little as possible with his own opinions. I had another lesser Poly Sci professor who would have the class read a law, then HE would tell us what the law MEANT and how it SHOULD be interpreted.

While he may have a valid point, his job is to teach students to think and find that point on their own, not to brow-beat them into agreeing with him.

Wasn't Michigan State the university that fought tooth and nail to KEEP affirmative action for "the sake of equality"?

Yup, he's a goner. He'll end up at some outstanding private university making half as much, teaching people twice as intelligent (in terms of common sense)

He wont get fired. When I went to Virginia Tech there was an Engineering professor who made comments about women not being able to be engineers becuase they couldn't make decisions at certain times of the month. He refused to apologize and they stuffed him into teaching the intro to engineering courses to freshman. If this guy has tenure they cant touch him. They can make sure he gets no research money and teaches intro classes only BUT he will keep his job. No apology means no major reasearch work or money. The only reason that Ward Churchill was fired was because there was evidence of plagarism.
