I've rebarreled a Rem XP100 to 7.62 X 39 and have been shooting it with the bolt from my 7mm BR. (shoots great, BTW, excellent hog gun)

The original bolt was .221 Fireball.


I need a bit of help to either find a bolt that will work, (I think 7mm BR might be the only one) A 7mm BR bolt to buy outright or trade the .221 Bolt for, or find another bolt that can be made to work.

Would some of the XP smart guy's help me out? Thanks, Paul

I'm gonna wait a bit, to see if somebody has a bolt to trade or some other deal I can't refuse, before I pull the trigger on a fluted, Sako extractor cut, one piece, hi zoot, piece of jewelery. (but that's what I really want, lol)

When I put this piece together, (17 inch/.308 Ruger varmint barrel take off) the lug contact was very good in both actions, with the 7mmBR bolt. I finished chambering by hand, to minium headspace, with my handloads on S&B brass, out of RCBS dies. So far I've not encountered any factory rounds that will not chamber and fire. (It's not real fond of steel case Wolf, lots of flyers, but it will eat it.)
 
The jury is really still out on the Sako extractor. Seems that the risk of catching shrapnel in the face/eyes if a case ruptures is greater with the Sako than the Remmy extractor. Problem with a used bolt is that it may not headspace correctly (you got lucky). If it is too open (excess headspace) you won't be able to correct it without pulling the barrel and setting it back. Of course, if you did the build, you already know that. :)
 
Thanks Bill. I hadn't heard that about the Sako piece, time to dust off my Google fu.

The reason for the push to finish this project is simple. The 7mmBR is going for an extended visit with a friend of mine (out of state) and I've got some hog's around here that need killin' with the X39.

A year or so ago, I had brief contact with a smith that would alter my .221 bolt, for a reasonable fee, but he has since passed on. Does enybody have a lead to someone that might be set up to do the work?

I need to ask around, but I'm pretty sure the problem with a Sako style extractor is when a gunsmith adapts a factory Rem 700 bolt to fit one. They are not a problem win a Sako rifle, or a quality aftermarket bolt (like PTG) that is made to accept one. As a p.s. check out the M-16 style extractor that most people prefer.

If you have ever seen someone fit a Sako type or M16 type extractor to a factory R700 bolt, you would shudder. Besides the fact that many of the folks who do this don't really know what they are doing, it involves lots of metal removal and installation of a new bolt nose.

There was a famous big lawsuit a few years back where a gunsmith lost his business over the installation. I heard that he did it right, but the customer used wrong ammunition and the court blamed the gunsmith. The extractor blew out and the shooter was harmed, but the pressure developed was crazy high due to the wrong ammo being fired.
 
Lathedog, I appreciate the heads up.

My Google foo may not be strong enough, but I could not find any info referring to a Rem 600/XP-100 bolt failure, linked to an installed Sako extractor. (Any caliber)

Can you (or anybody else) point me to a good source of XP-100 info, that might shed more light on this question?
