I am in need of two sets of scope rings. One set for a H&R Handi rifle and the other for a Bullberry/Encore. Both rifles will be sporting 3-9x40 scopes. The H&R will have a Bushnell 3-9x40 Elite 3200 and the Encore will have the Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40. I am looking at Warne Maxima Fixed and Leupold PRW. Will medium height work with either ring on the aforementioned setups?

with 40mm Objective Bells you should be more than fine. Could probably even go with low rings if you wanted really good low profile. That is more along the lines of your cheek weld height and such. Some like medium height rings because they have a little higher natural cheek weld.

Thanks for the reply. The H&R is for my son and the Encore is mine. I was worried about the bell clearing the hammer.

In most people's opinion, you want the Obj Lense as close to the barrel as you can get it without it touching, I dont know why, but they told me to get a 40mm for that reason.

I guess a better question would be, will a 3-9x40 clear the hammer with low or medium rings on the H&R and Encore?

The base selected will have an affect on ring height selection as well. Some are thicker allowing you to use a lower ring height (all else being equal).

I have enough parts and pieces around to test fit for most new set-ups but if that isn't the case for you look at buying locally. Lightly secure the bottom halves and set the scope in the cradle to see if it clears and if the alignment is proper for the shooter.

JD, the other benefit to a low slung scope (aside from keeping it's profile less conspicuous for you tactical guys) is to keep it as close to the bore as possible. We should be kicking and screaming every time a manufacturer comes out with a new 56mm objective then ignore the offering. Good glass and a larger main tube will let in plenty of light and no one shooting a 40X scope expects a wide field of view.

My targets are usually small, And when I really want to see something I will have spotting scope after Xmas.
But I think My Nikon 3-9x40 prostaff BDC will serve well. once I take it out of its box that is.

Depends on the diameter and shape of the ocular. As a general rule, I would expect it not to clear with low rings.

I run Leupold VX1 2x-7x/33 on my H&Rs, using Rifleman low rings. I can *just* get the hammer to clear the waist where the ocular meets the scope body, and also get proper cheekweld. It was not easy to find this combination.... A Leupold 3x-9x/40 should use the same ocular housing as the 2x-7x/33 so it MAY work, but it's likely that the eye relief will be different and you may not be able to get the scope in the correct position to make the low rings work.

My dad runs a 3-9X42 Sightron SII on his Encore Pro Hunter muzzleloader and a Leupold 3.5-10X40 VX 3 on the .300 Win. Mag. barrel. Both have one piece T/C weaver style bases and Leupold QRW med. rings. Were it mine, it would have a hammer extension but his model has the adjustable hammer (swivels ~45 deg. left or right). It would also have a cheek riser as it simply sits too high for me.

It really is a bit of trial and error.

Thanks to all for the responses. I ordered 2 sets of medium Warne Maxima rings. When the Bullberry arrives I will post pics. Have a safe and Merry Christmas !

Way to go. I love my warne rings, They have stood up to my .308 after about 120 rounds and have not let loose a bit, Just remember to torque the proper way. and not overtighten each screw before getting each one set, each screw, 1/8th turn at a time until all are snug, I screwed up the first time mounting my scope and it slid a little scraping the paint off.
