Charleston mayor Joseph Riley is ridiculing the idea that an armed person in the congregation could have stopped the recent mass shooting. (He was specifically arguing against Huckabee.)

For some reason that escapes me, no one anywhere is countering this argument with the church shootings that HAVE been stopped by armed members of the congregation, like in Colorado on December 9, 2007.

How do we get someone prominent to defend the idea of shooting back?

You could send the idea to every one of the possible prominent 2A supporters so when the question comes up they have the seed planted. Every report where the murders are mentioned on the internet has comments that people could point out that Jeanne Assam used her concealed handgun at New Life Church in 2007 to stop the shooter after he'd killed 4 and wounded 5.

We can not imply that the victims are in any way at fault, but simply point out that if Ms. Assam had been in the prayer group in Charleston Dylan Roof might have been stopped before he murdered 9 people.

when the church was shot up here in Texas the megachurches in the Dallas area started arming some of their 'trained' deacons. This was a few years back but I know there was a news story on it. I will see if I can find it.

We've had plenty of threads about church security, but none of that is going to do any good in this case. All that will be relevant is where an actual shooting was stopped in church. Maybes and might happens won't make our point.

We also can't go too far in presenting our argument by saying "the only way..." since the Unitarian Church shooting in my hometown was stopped by members swarming the shooter.

What we can argue is that Jeanne Assam was able to stop the murderer by herself with her concealed handgun that day in Colorado Springs and that the same could be done by anyone carrying in similar circumstances. Not that people should carry (the 2A guarantees our right after all and doesn't make it a requirement), but that if someone had been they'd have had a better opportunity to stop the shooting. We can't be seen blaming anyone for those deaths in that prayer group other than Dylann Roof since that is a certain failure to make our point that if someone had been carrying like Jeanne Assam they might have stopped the murders and saved some lives that day. Our choice to carry is what we're defending by making the point that if someone had acted as Ms. Assam had lives might have been spared.
